The South bears the highest burden of HIV in the U.S. — accounting for 52% of new HIV diagnoses in 2022 despite being home to just 38% of the population.

Key challenges:
🔴 Lowest PrEP-to-Need Ratio in the nation — only 12 PrEP users for every new diagnosis.
🔴 Stark racial disparities: Black Americans made up 48% of new diagnoses but just 23% of PrEP users in 2024.
🔴 Persistent barriers — poverty, lack of Medicaid expansion, rural access gaps, and pervasive stigma.

Now, with recent threats to federal HIV funding and research, progress toward ending the epidemic in the South and in the US is at risk.
📢 healthcare providers, advocates, and policymakers — we must work to expand prevention and protect funding & lifesaving treatment. https://bit.ly/3HJljVt

In CID, Pamela Pei, PhD, and colleagues project the impact of delaying LA-CAB/RPV implementation while awaiting trial data.

CAB/RPV for people with HIV and persistent viremia in the US would lead to more viral suppression and fewer deaths compared to oral-based ART regimens. Inc
