If you are constantly needing iron infusions and lots and lots of iron supplements and you are either having terrible reactions and your numbers are not changing that much it’s time to dig deeper and ask why. Unless you just gave birth, had blood loss, heavy periods or something along those lines we should not need to be replacing iron. More is not always the answer. We need to ask WHY!! Sure you may not be eating enough and adding more to your diet may be your answer, but if your iron is not circulating in your bloodstream it’s being stored in your tissues and can become toxic. We do not want the iron you are taking to be stored in your tissue. This means an iron recycling/transport issue. If your gut if off, you will not absorb iron as well either and it’s time to get your gut tested. If you do not have all the cofactors needed, iron will not get to where it needs to go. Unfortunately most doctors will not test these things.
I have talked a lot about ferritin, you can see my pinned post. I have had many people talk about their constantly low iron so I put together a free Ferritin guide. TikTok will not let me send a link so if you are interested, please find me over on Instagram and let me know you are there so I can send the free resource to you. Instagram-shannoncapuanowellness

✨ Testimonials are truly the heart of my work ✨

Every time I read one, I’m reminded what a gift it is to have a front row seat in a woman’s healing journey. 💜

I help women restore balance in their gut and hormones so they can finally feel like themselves again. Whether it’s stubborn acne, constant bloating, irregular cycles, brain fog, or any other frustrating symptom — you don’t have to keep struggling alone.

Your body can heal, and I’d love to show you how. 🌿

✨ Comment “I’m Ready” to begin your healing journey today ✨

I was a mess. My periods were heavy and unbearable, I lived on sugar, caffeine, and a standard American diet that left me wrecked. My stomach was so bloated I looked five months pregnant, and the acne covering my face left me painfully self-conscious.

I chased every quick fix — diets, endless cardio, fasting, and extreme calorie cuts — only to find myself binging at night and on weekends, stuck in the same cycle of defeat.

Everything shifted when I began to nourish myself differently, when I learned to manage stress, created sustainable habits, and finally ran functional labs that showed me what my body truly needed.

That’s when I uncovered the root cause of my symptoms — and once I did, I never looked back.

It is my joy to bring to help my clients on their health journey!

If your practitioner is not talking with you about food and how it may be contributing to your health complaints, it may be time to find someone new.

Our food choices support or don’t support our systems of the body.

Here is what is being supported in my body today.

Potassium-rich meal: Banana, carrots, peppers, and prunes all support heart, kidney, and blood pressure regulation.
• Bone + muscle support: Eggs, cheese, and prunes add calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and manganese.
• Thyroid + hormone support: Selenium and zinc from eggs, cheese, and prunes.
• Digestive support: Fiber + sorbitol from prunes, resistant starch from banana (esp. if not overly ripe).
• Nervous system: Choline (eggs), calcium, magnesium, potassium all regulate neurotransmitters and calm the stress response.

✨ This meal is especially supportive for heart health, bones, and the nervous system, while giving a nice boost to digestion and detox pathways.

I have moved away from using the word, “diet,” these days. It can have negative connotations of restricting, poor relationship with food, cutting all foods out we love.
Now, I 100% believe there is a time and place for a quick food diary, counting calories for a very short period of time to get a baseline and cutting foods out that you are having a reaction too to help heal the gut.
When I am working with my premenopausal women, we are going to eat! We eat to nourish our homemones, to balance blood sugar to avoid those crashes throughout the day, keep insulin resistance and to lose weight if needed. We are moving from extreme deficits that have harmed our bodies because diet culture told us to and now we are dealing the consequences of low bone density, diminished vitamins and nutrients and some crazy gut issues. We will eat our carbs, fats, protein and fight for our fiber everyday. Our bodies need nourishment as we make our way through our perimenopausal journey. If you would love extra support on this journey, I love working with women 1:1 to set them up to feel their best. Please feel free to contact me.

If your body is not getting iron where it needs to go, it’s a transport issue, not a more iron issue. It can actually be toxic to your body when you keep giving yourself more iron if it not absorbing/transporting . Ever wonder why iron pills and transfusions leave you feeling worse? Low iron and low ferritin is often a much bigger issue than not getting enough iron.

Why Copper Can Be the Missing Link in Low Ferritin

If you’ve been taking iron for months and your ferritin still won’t budge, the problem might not be the iron — it might be copper.

Copper’s Job

Copper teams up with a protein called ceruloplasmin to move iron out of your tissues and into your blood, where it can be stored as ferritin or used to make red blood cells.

When Copper or Ceruloplasmin is Low

Iron gets “stuck” in the wrong places (like your liver) instead of being stored or used.
That means you can have:
• Low ferritin
• Symptoms of anemia
• Little to no improvement from iron supplements

Why Copper Might Be Low
• Diet low in copper-rich foods (like oysters, liver, nuts, seeds)
• Too much zinc (it competes with copper)
• Liver issues or chronic inflammation

“I couldn’t keep all the plates spinning.
My stress resilience was gone.
Estrogen was dropping.
And suddenly… I didn’t care about anything.

My nervous system? A disaster.
I was running at a pace my body couldn’t sustain — until it finally forced me to slow down.

Sound familiar?
You’re married, raising kids, working a demanding job, carrying the weight of too many responsibilities or whatever YOUR story is.
Your mental health is hanging by a thread.
You’re either raging or crying.
A belly appears out of nowhere.
Your skin feels like it aged overnight.

Here’s the truth:
Sometimes you have to say no.
To the extra projects.
To the social plans.
To the pressure of keeping up with everyone else.

And that’s not selfish.
It’s survival.

When you slow down, your hormones have a chance to recalibrate. Your nervous system can finally exhale.
You remember what joy feels like — and you start loving yourself again.

Perimenopause isn’t about doing more.
It’s about doing less… and feeling better than you have in years.”

down in perimenopause isn’t a sign you’re “falling behind” — it’s your body’s way of asking for a shift in pace and priorities.

During this stage, your hormones fluctuate wildly, which affects everything from sleep to mood to recovery time. The high-energy, push-through approach that may have worked in your 20s and 30s often backfires now, spiking stress hormones and worsening symptoms like hot flashes, brain fog, and weight changes.

Think of this as strategic slowing, not giving up. Your body is recalibrating, and when you honor that, you often find more consistent energy, better mood, and a stronger body than if you just push through.

To say goodbye to bloating is to know why to u are bloating in the first place.
1. Your hormones are imbalanced. This is true for HRT users or not. Sometimes the ratio of estrogen to progesterone ratio is off creating bloating.
2. Sometimes it is a certain food to u are eating.
3. Sometimes something is up in your gut. A pathogen, candida, an overgrowth of bad bacteria or food not being broken down or absorbed well.

1. Sometimes it not an iron/ferritin issue at all, it’s a circulation/transport issue and copper needs to be tested.
2. It’s often a gut issue and you are not absorbing iron because you have pathogens, low stomach acid or are not absorbing nutrients well.
3. You may need to eat an iron rich diet.
4. Low ferritin makes POTS and tachycardia worse.
5. It may be time to work with me to get to the root cause of why low ferritin is an issue. I’d love to share which functional testing I love to run on clients. 😘

Welcome to menopause, where your thermostat is broken, your memory is on vacation, and your bra might be the only thing holding you together. 😅

Mood swings? More like mood rollercoaster with no seatbelt.
Hot flashes? Call me Sweaty Spice.
Libido? Somewhere between “meh” and “do not disturb.”

💊 And yes, I do want to fight someone for touching the thermostat.
👀 And no, I don’t remember where I put my keys—or my sanity.

Tag a friend who’s also questioning everything except the snack drawer. 🍫
