Dynamic vs. Static Wrinkles — What’s the Difference?

If you’ve ever wondered why some lines only show when you smile while others stick around all the time, here’s the scoop 👇🏻

Dynamic Wrinkles
These are the lines that appear with facial expressions — think smiling, frowning, squinting, or raising your brows.
They’re caused by repeated muscle movement over time.
Common spots: crow’s feet, forehead lines, & frown lines.

Static Wrinkles
These lines are present even when your face is at rest.
They develop as skin loses collagen, elasticity, and hydration, and can deepen from sun exposure or lifestyle factors.
Common spots: nasolabial folds, marionette lines, & deeper forehead creases.

Why Knowing the Difference Matters
Different wrinkles respond to different treatments:
Dynamic → often best treated with neuromodulators (like Botox/Dysport)
Static → often benefit from fillers, microneedling, lasers, or collagen-boosting treatments

A glowing transformation. Before and after one Deka Pulse laser treatment with the Tetra Pro CO2 laser (this is a deeper treatment vs cool peel). We also added some filler to her cheeks and dysport.

The first and second photo shows her initial consultation photo before any work and then after.
The additional photos is day of her deep laser and then a follow up photo 3 weeks after.

Such beautiful stunning enhancements made. 🙌🏻

Yesterday I spent the morning talking science 🤓 with Dr. Rivas, the chief science medical liaison with Revance Aesthetics. Dr. Rivas was part of the clinical studies with Daxxify, a unique peptide-formulated neuromodulator (that is made in the USA! 🇺🇸). Dr. Rivas is brilliant and a wealth of knowledge!
