Had to put my sunglasses on to get this guy’s glamour shots. 😎

🚀 The shine on this horse is really out of this world and a testament to the diet and care he receives.

🤎 Now that his fluffy coat is off, he can enjoy the days ahead in comfort.

✂️ My glistening friend was clipped with my KM10+ and polished up with Shiny by to really make him sparkle!

✨ I’ve been getting to clip a bunch of cool & flashy colors recently and this guy was so nice!

⭐️ Murphy is a gorgeous dun and was looking super shiny after his clip. He was 100% an angel to work with as well!

*Disclaimer: Use caution when working around a horse’s hind end. This is my personal horse who I’ve had for the last 15 years, I know he is not going to kick me. Also, please seek veterinary attention if you notice your horse’s tail is consistently being decorated with streaks of s**t.*

Being able to read a horse’s body language is critical for having a safe and successful clip.

💈I often get comments from people saying “I’m a dog groomer, I want to clip horses.” or “I’m a hairstylist and love horses, how can I do this?”.

💭 While it’s a great thought— dog grooming and horse grooming are totally different worlds and cutting people’s hair is the absolute furthest from knowing how to cut hair on horses.

💫 I absolutely encourage everyone to follow their dreams but, clipping horses is not for everyone and here’s why.

⚠️ The most important and most forgotten reason—

‼️ It can be dangerous.

🐴 If you don’t know the ins and outs of horses, how their brain works, what they are thinking and if you can’t predict their next move, please don’t attempt to clip them.

🛟 The goal is always safety. Your safety. The horse’s safety. And the safety of everyone else around you. You will need to make split second decisions. You will need to know that something is going to happen, before it happens. You need to anticipate their next move and you need to know when to call it quits and try again another day.

⏳ All of these points take years (and I mean many years) of experience to really feel confident. And then, because horses will be horses, it is then that you will be humbled and reminded real fast that at the end of the day, they are animals with a mind of their own and sometimes no matter how experienced and trained you are— accidents can still happen.

🗺️ This guy is also beginning his journey to Australia in a couple of weeks. It has been such a pleasure working with him and I can’t wait to get updates of him and his brother once they get settled.

✂️ Coi is feeling nice and fresh for his big trip. He was clipped with my KMC+ and is looking so sleek and flawless.

I don’t always know when I’m going to have a “last time” with the horses I clip.

💖 But when I do know I’m seeing them for the last time, it definitely gets me in the feels.

🇦🇺 Wibout is moving to Australia next month with his brother, Coi. Today, was their final clip appointment before their departure and man, I’m going to miss this guy tremendously.

🖤 Wibout was one of my first regular clients on a recurring schedule. I have been clipping him every 10 weeks for the last 5 years. I remember his mom telling me the first day we met that he’s not a fan of having his ears or his face being done and he ended up actually loving it and was always perfect for me every time I worked with him.

✈️ Today was hard. Saying goodbye to not one but two horses who I have grown to love. They have quite the journey ahead of them but, once they get to their destination, I know they are going to love it.

✌🏻Wibout, my dude. It’s been real. Thanks for being the most perfect gentleman for the past 5 years. Have the safest of travels and I can’t wait to see pictures of you and Coi when you’re all settled on the other side of the world in AU. 🌏

🙏🏻 If there’s anyone seeing this from over there and you know of anyone who clips well in the Sydney area, my 2 friends will need someone to clip them once they are ready for it there. They won’t need it year round like they do here but, certainly in the hotter months for sure. Please reach out if you know anyone who I can recommend to my client for them.

Have you ever seen a more beautifully colored baby mini? 🥰

🩶💛 Little Monty definitely wins the title for most colorful! He’s such a gorgeous little guy and was quite a rockstar for his first full body clip.

💈He’s had some introduction to clipping previously (not by me), but only sections of him were done at a time which is really the way to go! This was his first time standing for the duration of a full clip and I was so super proud of him!

🍎 It’s a lot to ask of such a young kid but, we gave him several breaks, offered him snacks and did our best to make this experience a good one and he was very happy to participate! His lower legs were a bit questionable for him but, he put his brave hat on and I was able to get them done. Hopefully he will be just as great for his next clip!

It’s time to talk about guard hairs and “Why isn’t my horse’s hair growing?!”

I’ve included photos of what a decent amount of coats have been looking like this past season. Guard hairs growing fast but, the undercoat growth slows tremendously or stalls completely.

So, why?? What gives?? Is it your fault? Is it your clipper’s fault? Is there something wrong with your clippers? Is your horse suddenly unhealthy because his coat is looking bleached with wirey pig hair?

This has driven me absolutely CRAZY for the last couple of years of trying to figure this out. I have seen this stalled growth happen with horses & ponies of all sizes, all occupations & all over the world, metabolic or not. I don’t know why we are seeing it happening more this past season but, maybe some others who are knowledgeable about this can chime in, in the comments. 🙏🏻

I have spoken to other pro grooms, pro clippers all around the WORLD, local colleagues, veterinarians, nutritionists and nutritional advisors and while many of them were equally as stumped as I was— the most common agreement is that when clipping around or after the winter solstice, the horse’s undercoat is signaled to stop its growth. The guard hairs however, continue to grow at regular speed as winter (real winter, not Florida winter) is the time of year when guard hairs are actually needed. As we get closer to the summer solstice, the coat will return to normal as their summer coat grows in.

So, no, it is not your fault or your clipper’s fault, you didn’t do a bad clip job that stunted your horse’s hair growth and no, your horse isn’t suddenly unwell.

What can you do to fix it?
Unfortunately, nothing. You’ve just got to wait it out until their summer coat comes in.

Also, please don’t make your horses suffer by not clipping them around the winter solstice to avoid this from happening. If your horse is hot in Florida winter or sweating a lot while in work in real winter, please clip them. We can deal with the guard hair growth later. Their comfort comes first, always.

Trimmers vs Body Clippers: What’s the difference?

Body clippers and trimmers each have their own reasons for use however, doing a full body clip on a horse with a trimmer, is NOT recommended. Can it be done? Probably. But, trimmers and 5in1 blades are not designed for full body clips.

As a professional clipper myself, I always like to have a trimmer on hand to put the finishing touches on my horses at the conclusion of their clips.

Trimmers are best for tidying up between clips, clipping smaller areas like bridle paths, ears and blending legs, creative clipping, detail work and creating sharp lines.

Body clippers have the motor and durability to power through the thickest of coats with ease while trimmers will often struggle, jam and possibly even break along the way if it is ran through a dense enough coat.

If you’re planning on doing a full or partial clip, please use an appropriate body clipper for that job such as the Wahl KMC+, Wahl Supera, Wahl KM10+ and similar style clippers.

About Us

Centerline Equine Clipping was established to help horses and ponies of all occupations to look and feel their best in south Florida. Whether your horse is a retiree, barrel racer, show or trail horse, they can all benefit from being body clipped year-round in the sunshine state.

Originally from Long Island, New York, the continuous heat in Florida was a challenge for my draft cross gelding who grew a natural thick coat for the winter season. Finding someone to clip him so frequently was a challenge therefore, Centerline Equine Clipping was founded. I offer body clipping services by appointment only, at an affordable rate so that more horses can be kept cool, comfortable and looking their best for the show ring at any time of the year. Services can be extended to those in Long Island as well, as I travel there often, excluding the months of January through April.

Whether you’re scheduling an appointment for your horse’s first clip or for your seasoned show horse, it is my goal to provide a positive clipping experience for them. With an eye for detail, you can be assured that your horse will look incredible and feel refreshed. Send a message to the page to contact me with your request and to set up an appointment. I look forward to working with you and your horse!
