ARE YOU PROTECTED FROM MEASLES RUBEOLA?
For $9 DPC Members can check their status.

Measles is in the news due to an rapidly expanding outbreak. As of 2/21/25, active cases are recorded in Alaska, California, Georgia, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, Rhode Island, and Texas. The current hospitalization rate is 25% of cases identified. ALL of the cases are in un/under-vaccinated people, 0% of cases with people who received the complete vaccination.

Measles is scary, even for medical professionals. Most people do not realize there are 2 types of Measles-- Rubeola (the bad one we are talking about) and Rubella "German measles." Please see the illustration for a brief explanation of this preventable illness, which can have lasting complications present even years after the initial infection.

In the United States, the MMR vaccine, which covers for both types, became a standard requirement for entering school in 1980. However, since only 1 vaccine administration was 78% effective and shown to wear off over time, in 1989 a two-shot series became standard to bring this vaccine to 93% effective at avoiding the disease. Personally, I only had 1 vaccine as a child, and in medical school we were required to test our immune titers, where it was found I had not maintained immunity and I received a booster. Thankfully, since we are a global community, I was protected while I was exposed to a measles case while working in NY; an event that emphasized my understanding for public health measures.
