Shop Smarter During Covid 19 Tips
☐ Review foods you already have in your refrigerator and pantry before writing a grocery
list.
☐ This prevents overbuying of items already in the home and will encourage buying items
that are low stock or none in your home.
Make a written grocery list
☐ If your grocery store does not offer in-store pickup or delivery, take a paper grocery list
to grocery store that you can throw out when you are done.
☐ Organize your grocery list into different sections according to layout of the grocery store.
▪ Fruits/vegetables, dairy, grains, protein foods, others……
☐ Prepare a grocery list that will cover you and everyone in your household for 2 – 3 weeks.
Use fresh, frozen and non-perishable food items
☐ Include fresh, frozen, and non-perishable food items on your grocery list.
☐ Look for frozen and canned food items labeled “low sodium”, “no salt added”,
“no added sugar”.
Use overlapping ingredients
☐ Plan meals that incorporate overlapping ingredients.
☐ For example tomatoes, tomato sauce, potatoes, onions, zucchini, eggplant, carrots,
chicken, stew meat, and beans can be used to make soups, stews, and pasta dishes.
Store Foods Properly
☐ Store older food items in the front of the refrigerator and pantry and newly purchased
food items behind them.
☐ This way you eat the older food items before the newer ones.
Understand the dates on food labels
☐ “Sell buy” dates – the last day the grocery store can sell the food to ensure its freshness.
☐ “Best if used by” or “Best buy” dates – recommended date for best flavor or quality.
☐ “Use by” dates – use or freeze by this date.
