TOO MANY SNACKS?

This is a frustrating but common concern. As tempting as it may be to force, beg, bribe, or hide (the veggies), don't. Instead, continue to offer a variety of fruits and veggies, but rather than saying anything about it, let them decide whether or not to eat them. You can also increase fruit and veggie intake by prepping it and leaving it front and center in your fridge or on your counter
How can I get my child to eat fruits and veggies? It's all about balance. Stock your kitchen with a variety of choices-- everything from processed and fun packaged snacks to fresh and delicious apples can fit into a healthful diet. Provide balanced snacks that include a protein, starch, and fruit or veggie. Encourage them to mix and match different foods to keep it interesting and satisfying. Are they interested in cooking? Have them pick out a recipe and help you cook. There are many reasons why your adolescent may be eating a lot of snacks. Possible reasons to consider include (1) hunger due to not eating enough at meals or needing more calories because of sports/activity or a growth spurt; (2) emotions such anxiety, stress, or sadness, and (3) other feelings such as boredom or procrastination. If this occurs now or then or in spurts, chances are there is no need for concern. Be sure you are offering 3 meals a day and that they are coming to the table hungry. You could also encourage set snack times between meals which should cut down on "grazing." However, if you still have concerns, consider meeting with a Registered Dietitian who specializes in intuitive eating and family nutrition.

Shop Smarter During Covid 19 Tips
☐ Review foods you already have in your refrigerator and pantry before writing a grocery
list.
☐ This prevents overbuying of items already in the home and will encourage buying items
that are low stock or none in your home.
Make a written grocery list
☐ If your grocery store does not offer in-store pickup or delivery, take a paper grocery list
to grocery store that you can throw out when you are done.
☐ Organize your grocery list into different sections according to layout of the grocery store.
▪ Fruits/vegetables, dairy, grains, protein foods, others……
☐ Prepare a grocery list that will cover you and everyone in your household for 2 – 3 weeks.
Use fresh, frozen and non-perishable food items
☐ Include fresh, frozen, and non-perishable food items on your grocery list.
☐ Look for frozen and canned food items labeled “low sodium”, “no salt added”,
“no added sugar”.
Use overlapping ingredients
☐ Plan meals that incorporate overlapping ingredients.
☐ For example tomatoes, tomato sauce, potatoes, onions, zucchini, eggplant, carrots,
chicken, stew meat, and beans can be used to make soups, stews, and pasta dishes.
Store Foods Properly
☐ Store older food items in the front of the refrigerator and pantry and newly purchased
food items behind them.
☐ This way you eat the older food items before the newer ones.
Understand the dates on food labels
☐ “Sell buy” dates – the last day the grocery store can sell the food to ensure its freshness.
☐ “Best if used by” or “Best buy” dates – recommended date for best flavor or quality.
☐ “Use by” dates – use or freeze by this date.
