Are you curious about trauma bonds and why they are so difficult to break?

A relationship that is trauma bonded can be very intense and emotional. In psychology, we say that the most effective reinforcement is what we call intermittent reinforcement. As it was explained to me in grad school, "the rat hits the bar hoping for the pellet and does not get it every time or even every third time. It gets the reward randomly." This type of behavioral conditioning is highly effective.

What do rats have to do with your relationship? The intermittent positive behavior that you get in between these "ugly" incidents keeps you hanging on. The anticipation of the affection, attention, or s*x that follows these periods of conflict and high-stress levels actually bonds you to your partner. This is known as a trauma bond.

The reason this can become an addictive cycle is because of the rush of stress hormones. Cortisol for example can make a person feel exhilarated during conflict. Then when you make up, the dopamine and oxytocin triggered in the reward center of the brain can fool you into thinking that you are in love.

This emotional rollercoaster can create an obsessive quality to the relationship. Even when you end a relationship like this, it can be hard to stick with it.

Going through a breakup can trigger activity in the same regions of the brain that get activated when we are in physical pain, not to mention that we experience a drop in the production of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin that create feelings of pleasure and happiness, giving you that sad and depressed feeling. All of this leaves you feeling like you need to get back together to get the high you once had.

What You Can Do to End the Cycle:

Leaving when you have a trauma bond can be very difficult. It is difficult for people who have never had that experience or are not professionals to understand why you don't just leave. Oftentimes, leaving is a process that takes time and therapy with the right therapist can be most beneficial.

Part 3

💡 How Does Your Subconscious Work?
And Why Are You Stuck on Shame

Here is a sometimes difficult yet life-changing truth:
Everything in your life, including the things you don’t like, is a result of what you are subconsciously choosing, attracting, and attracted to.

Your subconscious is responsible for about 95% of your patterns, who you are, what you do, what you think, and what you feel.
Your subconscious is primarily invested in your survival. It wants to keep you alive. It does so by investing in what is known to be safe and avoiding what isn’t known to be safe.

How does your subconscious know what is safe?

Familiarity.

Have you survived this before? Have you survived this over and over? If yes — even if it’s something like anxiety, rejection, or shame — it is familiar and, therefore, safe. You will only ever be, do, and have what your subconscious believes is safe.

It’s not easy for most people to immediately feel the empowerment of this sentiment. It’s the opposite. Most people, when they learn this, feel:

1️⃣ Immense shame and embarrassment when beginning to own the truth that every pattern in their life, including things like being stuck in emotionally unavailable relationships, is something they’ve subconsciously chosen.
And
2️⃣, most people feel super overwhelmed by the idea that their life is determined by something they don’t have immediate access to. Like, “How do I change any of this if none of it is in my conscious awareness???”

⭐️I want you to know three things:

The shame and embarrassment you feel about your patterns serve a functional purpose. They come from a part of you who is invested in keeping things the same (keeping you alive) and avoiding the unknown. No matter how bad things might be, this part doesn’t want you to change because it wants to keep you alive. It’s actually a beautiful survival mechanism at play. However, it’s frustrating when you don’t know how to change it.

Your subconscious can transform. You can upgrade your version of safety and familiarity to align with what you want from life. It is so possible. I saw it in myself and see it happen for others daily.

Unconditional love + big, bold goals = subconscious transformation.

Jumping timelines, accessing the Next Level (see previous post) and getting closer to your Aspirational Self asks you to fall in love with all parts of you. Not because love is sacred but because love is by far the most creative energy. Spending your life harnessing and amplifying your creative power is THE path to fulfillment.

I can teach you how to do this.

Part 2 from yesterday:

🪜Three Levels of Personal Growth
Let’s look at three ways The Two Versions of You can be expressed.

Level 1 :
This person is either immensely overwhelmed and disempowered or blissfully ignorant. At Level 1, the Actual and Aspirational Selves happen by accident.
This person’s patterns are created unconsciously, and their vision of their aspirational self is created unconsciously. They haven’t chosen what they want to create. This person doesn’t know what they want and may be unaware they can have wants.

Level 2:
This person has opened their eyes to the possibility of change. They recognize that their Actual Self has been largely determined by subconscious programming but they recognize that change is possible.
They are starting to formulate the vision of their Aspirational Self. However, there is a sense of stuckness and how-do-I-get-from-here-to-there-ness 😫.
There’s some change here, but it’s sludgy. Getting to the Aspirational Self seems like an arduous journey, and they want the process to speed up.

Level 3:
This person is empowered. Life is enriching, satisfying, and fulfilling. They have spent time crafting the vision of their Aspirational Self and have taken focused, efficient, bold, and aligned action to bridge the gap between their Actual Self and their Aspirational Self.
This person unconditionally loves themselves and every moment of life because they are clear on their Aspirational Self and know how to create that version of themselves. This person has dramatically released the urge to control and speed up time.

Here are three points I want you to take from this:
No one is just one level 100% of the time. Sometimes, you may be on all three levels in a given moment. What matters is where you predominantly spend your time.

Whether accidental or on purpose, both your Actual and Aspirational Selves are being created every moment. Life sucks when it happens by accident. Life is amazing when it happens on purpose.

Most people get stuck at Level 2. Why is that?

10/16/2023

Motivated but Stuck?
How to Get From Your Actual Self to Your Aspirational Self 🎯

💕 Two Versions of You
Let’s say you have two versions: your Actual Self and your Aspirational Self.

📌 The Actual Self
The cold, hard truth of your patterns:
The patterns of your internal states (what do you predominantly feel?)
The patterns of your external states (what are your relationships like? What is your relationship with money like?)
Think of it as the culmination of all your patterns and life experiences up to this point.

🚀 The Aspirational Self
The version of yourself you dream of becoming.
There will always be a gap between your Actual Self and your Aspirational Self, and that’s great news. Seriously. That’s what makes being alive worth it. This gives us problems to solve, processes to engage in, and things to create.

However, most people don’t enjoy the gap between their Actual Self and their Aspirational Self. They don’t find the gap empowering or motivating.

Soon, I will explain why that is and offer you a solution for closing the gap.

Then, one day, it clicks.
The pain you had turns into peace as you accept that everything had to happen exactly as it did for you to be exactly who you are now. You hold no blame, bitterness, or resentment toward the experience, person, or yourself. Instead, you see it as the catalyst that led to your change and development. The very storm that shook so much in you also worked to clear your path.

Lets talk couples counseling.
I really enjoy working with couples yet most couples don't realize that the foundation of a relationship comes from the inner work of each individual within the relationship.

If you want to learn how to self heal, become self aware, and set yourself free from past limiting beliefs, coping mechanisms, and trauma follow along.

The behaviors and patterns usually learned in childhood sabotage us when we don't heal and when we don't do our inner work. It contaminates the relationship. Even if your relationship starts out really beautiful and really awesome when we haven't addressed our past hurts it eventually starts to tear the relationship apart because all those unhealed parts of us start to cause issues.

I’m in my twentieth year of marriage and I had to uproot my own wounds because they tried to drive our relationship apart-its their very nature. My husband had to do the same.

If you want to learn (single or in a relationship) how all this is playing out in your life come see me/us. You’ve most likely been doing this your whole life so yes, it will take time. If you know me that is ok (as long as we are not close friends as that would be unethical) but you can see my associates in the office. I want to empower you and help you feel super inspired and motivated. I also love the idea of making a change for our children and grandchildren. By working on yourself you are giving a gift to future generations!

Healing these burdens from the past is key because they are untrue. In doing so, you can stay in the truth which is that you love your partner, or your future partner and yourself. That's the truth, that's what we all want, we want to stay in that love. We want to stay in that joy and it's about removing what is not true which is all the ego stuff and the wounds and the shadows and all the self sabotage and past trauma.

The number one question I get is about relationships and that was really what inspired me to write this. Counseling can help you to become really clear, connected and compassionate.

Its ok to talk about all the sh*t you go through and feel. I promise you are not alone in wondering why you may be attracted to another person outside of your marriage and wondering what that means, or struggling with addiction and conflict. If there is no conflict in a marriage/relationship that can also be a red flag.

Lets talk about how to navigate that because we're human, from a conscious place, and use those things that come up as a facilitation for having a breakthrough and not letting it define you but saying, “great, this is coming up because this is our opportunity to heal something inside of ourselves and push through this either as an individual or as a couple.”

Everything good in my life has come from my relationship with my husband. It is the foundation and the bedrock of all goodness in my life. It's made me become a better person. my husband has held me accountable when I didn’t want to be. The most exciting thing to me is that every day I'm with Matt my love is only getting bigger and that's my greatest goal to share with you.

I really do have a testimony of eternal love and the concept of- the longer we're together the more I love him- and that is what my greatest passion about this work is.

I believe that true love only expands as time goes on because you're only having more and more memories together. You're only having more and more experiences together and even if they've been traumatic now I can look back and say “hey remember that crazy sh*t?- I love you, I can't believe we got through that together.”
So love in my opinion, and what I want to share with you is it expands, it grows over time because with each passing day you've just shared more love together. xo.
I think the world has it backwards because I usually hear things like, “Oh our love just fizzled out,” and there is this vibe of love decreasing over time and I actually have a complete opposite approach of when it's based in something genuine and true it actually expands.

It’s completely valid if you’re grieving something you actively chose to walk away from and have no desire to go back to.

Grief can coexist with relief.

You are grieving the hopes you had and the things you missed.

Please join us in welcoming Kasey Bell to the team.

Kasey is a 500 hour certified yoga instructor and a reiki master teacher. Kasey is available for private reiki sessions and therapeutic yoga.

Reiki is a therapeutic practice that helps to balance the energy body or electromagnetic field. In a reiki session with Kasey you can expect reiki energy, guided meditation, crystal work, and essential oils to assist in healing. Through these practices we will activate the parasympathetic nervous system, or rest and digest mode, which allows deep healing to take place. The results are felt throughout the mind and the body. Each reiki session is unique and attuned to what the client needs at that time.

In a therapeutic yoga session you can expect yoga postures, mindfulness meditation, and breathing exercises. We will use the tools above to help you connect to the body, ground into the present moment, and regulate the nervous system. Yoga supports healing through the mind/body connection. The postures and breathing exercises help to move and process energy that is stored in the body, while the meditation helps us to settle the mind.

This year I’m going to give myself permission to evolve without confusing evolving as doing more.

To give myself permission to love myself in all the areas I know I will struggle with.

This year I’m giving myself permission to change course without viewing it as failure.

To meet the human I’m evolving into with deep love, grace, and respect.

How to respond when someone says something mean:

1. “I don’t like the way you said that.”
2. “I want you to be assertive. Choose your words and be mindful of your tone.”
3. “I want to make sure I’m responding appropriately, can you clarify what you meant?”
4. “That felt mean”
5. “Don’t speak to me that way”
6. “That sounds loaded. Is there something deeper we need to discuss?”
7. “Is there a different way of phrasing what you said because it sounded mean. Let’s try again.”

Don’t let it go. When someone says something mean, correct the behavior in the moment or soon after. When mistreatment is ignored, unwanted behaviors continue to occur.

Sometimes people aren’t aware of how they are expressing things to you; let them know when you want them to change their delivery.

**at first this is difficult to do in real time. If you notice later (you usually notice a feeling first) reflection is key. My favorite way to reflect is to journal but there are many ways to reflect. **
