World Semicolon Day 2024

"Authors use semicolons when a sentence could end, but they choose to continue it. Through the Semicolon Project, we are saying you are the author, the sentence is your life, and you are choosing to continue.” - Amy Bluel, founder of the nonprofit group Project Semicolon

Highly recommend this book for anyone with ADHD, who cares for a child with ADHD or works as a teacher or clinician with ADHD humans! Overview below ⬇️

“World-renowned authors Dr. Edward M. Hallowell and Dr. John J. Ratey literally “wrote the book” on ADD/ADHD more than two decades ago. Their bestseller, Driven to Distraction, largely introduced this diagnosis to the public and sold more than a million copies along the way.

Now, most people have heard of ADHD and know someone who may have it. But lost in the discussion of both childhood and adult diagnosis of ADHD is the potential upside: Many hugely successful entrepreneurs and highly creative people attribute their achievements to ADHD. Also unknown to most are the recent research developments, including innovations that give a clearer understanding of the ADHD brain in action. In ADHD 2.0, Drs. Hallowell and Ratey, both of whom have this “variable attention trait,” draw on the latest science to provide both parents and adults with ADHD a plan for minimizing the downside and maximizing the benefits of ADHD at any age. They offer an arsenal of new strategies and lifestyle hacks for thriving with ADHD, including:

• Find the right kind of difficult. Use these behavior assessments to discover the work, activity, or creative outlet best suited to an individual’s unique strengths.
• Reimagine environment. What specific elements to look for—at home, at school, or in the workplace—to enhance the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit inherent in the ADHD mind.
• Embrace innate neurological tendencies. Take advantage of new findings about the brain’s default mode network and cerebellum, which confer major benefits for people with ADHD.
• Tap into the healing power of connection. Tips for establishing and maintaining positive connection “the other Vitamin C” and the best antidote to the negativity that plagues so many people with ADHD.
• Consider medication. Gets the facts about the underlying chemistry, side effects, and proven benefits of all the pharmaceutical options.

As inspiring as it is practical, ADHD 2.0 will help you tap into the power of this mercurial condition and find the key that unlocks potential.”

Do you love a college student in your life? If so, make sure to check in with their mental health occasionally. Onset of mental health issues frequently occur during the college age years and it’s important that students are learning how to take care of their mental health as they are entering adulthood.

I love working with college aged clients and have immediate openings for students seeking therapy in Texas!

2/26-3/3 is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week!

*Awareness can lead to prevention and early diagnosis and treatment. Familiarity with eating disorders can also lead to increased consciousness and empathy for those who are suffering or struggling while decreasing the stigma often associated with these mental illnesses.

*Eating Disorders describe illnesses that are known by irregular eating habits and extreme concern about body weight or shape. Eating disturbances may include inadequate or excessive food intake, which can ultimately be damaging to a woman or man’s overall well-being.

*The most common forms of eating disorders include Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder. These mental health illnesses affect both females and males and can occur during any stage in life.

*Although these conditions are treatable, the symptoms and consequences can be injurious and deadly if not appropriately addressed. Eating disorders commonly coexist with other conditions, such as anxiety disorders, substance abuse, or depression.

Let’s take a minute to talk about one huge aspect of ADHD - impulsivity!

Impulsivity is no doubt one of the biggest challenges for children and teens with ADHD. However, when redirected to healthy outlets, impulsivity can spark creative ideas and novel solutions to complex problems. By leaning into this trait, individuals with ADHD can unlock their full potential and achieve remarkable results.

The key lies in harnessing impulsivity effectively. Rather than allowing it to control you, channeling it towards productive activities can lead to breakthroughs in creativity and problem-solving. This shift in perspective transforms ADHD traits from burdens into strengths.

However, the journey towards harnessing impulsivity does not come naturally to anyone with ADHD, especially children and teens. Each individual’s circumstances are unique, requiring personalized strategies for success.

This is where seeking guidance from a therapist trained in ADHD can help. A skilled therapist can provide individual support and insights, helping people leverage their unique strengths to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.

Ultimately, by embracing impulsivity and harnessing the power of the ADHD brain, children and teens can transform perceived weaknesses into strengths, paving the way for personal growth and success as they enter into adulthood. 🤍

*️⃣ As a mental health professional I have often wondered why we don’t have preventative measures in place to help detect and reduce anxiety and depression early on in children and teens. It’s common practice to take youth to the dentist every 6 months to help detect and prevent dental issues, but with the continued rise of anxiety, depression, inpatient hospitalization and su***de in children and teens, why aren’t we taking the same precautions when it comes to their mental health?

*️⃣ Thankfully, based on recent research, the US Preventative Services Task Force now recommends recommends screening for anxiety and depression in children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 years. Anxiety disorder, a common mental health condition in the US, comprises a group of related conditions characterized by excessive fear or worry that present as emotional and physical symptoms. The 2018-2019 National Survey of Children’s Health found that 7.8% of children and adolescents aged 3 to 17 years had a current anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders in childhood and adolescence are associated with an increased likelihood of a future anxiety disorder or depression.

*️⃣ If you care for a child or adolescent and would like to get them screened for anxiety or depression, feel free to contact me. Helping youth learn how to detect, talk about, and advocate for their own mental health is a passion of mine!
