Not only can self-care be inexpensive, it SHOULD be inexpensive. Self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity (and it isn’t always pretty) ☁️

Here are some therapist-approved self-care ideas that cost literally $0:

1. Throw that load of laundry that you’ve been putting off for days in the washer, even if you don’t have time to do anything else with it right now. Sometimes starting the process is the hardest part.

2. Practice yoga at home. has some great, accessible yoga videos on YouTube that you can do right from your living room. (Or if you’re in Fort Worth, often offers free/donation-based yoga classes in person and online 🐝)

3. Open a window to get some fresh air. Opening a window can help energetically clear your space, and can literally help to clear your space of stagnant air and indoor pollutants.

4. Actually read that book that’s been sitting on your shelf for months, or support your local library and check out a new one for free! Sometimes we all need a little healthy escapism.

5. Instead of hitting “I’m still watching” on that next episode, try taking a pause for 5 minutes to stretch or notice your breath.

6. Try 1 new thing a day. Maybe it’s not checking your phone until 10:00 AM, or maybe it’s walking up a different flight of stairs to get to your apartment. Even tiny changes keep our brain engaged.

7. Try out a new recipe using items you already have in your pantry and invite your friends over to taste test it.

8. Wear your favorite outfit. You don’t need an excuse! Life is the special occasion!

9. Schedule that doctor’s appointment you’ve been procrastinating. Your health is worth it. (I know healthcare is unfortunately not free, but scheduling the appointment is, and sometimes that’s the hardest part).

10. Say one kind thing to yourself. Out loud. This might feel silly, but the act of thinking, speaking, and hearing positive affirmations can be powerful.

Hills I will 💀 on as a therapist:

1. Your autonomy is more important than my “expertise.” I might be the mental health professional, but *you* are the expert on you.

2. If you ask your therapist about their political beliefs, the trauma-informed response is to answer 👏 the 👏 question 👏 The personal is political. Therapeutic safety cannot exist if your therapist doesn’t believe you deserve to have rights outside of their office.

3. Diagnosis often does more harm than good. The DSM’s main purpose is putting money in people’s pockets. Yes, there is value in labels and in naming what we’re experiencing, but the DSM isn’t the end-all-be-all.

4. “Christian counseling” is NOT therapy.

5. Just because someone says they are “trauma-informed” doesn’t always mean they are trauma-educated. Also ALL therapy should be trauma-informed or it isn’t therapeutic, it’s harmful.

It felt like a good time to share some tips on how to soothe your system with nature. We need you alert, but in order to sustainably stay alert, you have to first be well-regulated 💚

The parasympathetic (rest and digest) and sympathetic (fight/flight/freeze) parts of our nervous system operate a bit like the pedals on a car. When we push the gas on one, we are inherently hitting the brake on the other, and vice versa. It’s a delicate balancing act that requires ongoing maintenance 🫶

If physically attending a protest isn’t accessible or safe for you right now but you’re still looking for tangible ways to stay engaged with what’s happening, this is for you.

I’ve had so many conversations with people this week who are distraught by what’s happening in our country, but feel paralyzed and unsure of how they can help if they are unable to protest.

Protesting is only one avenue of resistance, and there are still SO many other accessible options to be engaged in positive change.

Get engaged in your local community. Show up. It’s fine if you can’t protest, but it’s not fine to sit back and do nothing.

We are stronger together. Abolish 🧊
