Cook Children's

Cook Children's At Cook Children's, we promise to improve the well-being of every child in our care and communities.

Nearly a century ago, the first children's hospital in Fort Worth opened with 30 beds and a promise to provide every child in the area access to medical care. From these humble beginnings Cook Children's has grown to become one of the largest and most recognized freestanding children's health care systems in the southwest. But one thing remains the same: the promise we made long ago, and intend to

keep for generations to come. For more on our history, go to: cookchildrens.org/about/history/Pages/default.aspx

marks the unofficial start of summer, drawing eager families to local pools and lakes. To ensure those fun days stay safe, Cook Children’s Lifeguard Your Child campaign equips parents with the tools to create a water safety plan. This mission takes on a global scale this summer; as North Texas prepares to welcome the World Cup, thousands of international visitors unfamiliar with Texas waters will arrive. Cook Children’s experts are stepping up to keep every little one safe.

A key part of this community-wide effort includes Cook Children’s Loaner Life Jacket Stations, which ensures that no child or adult is left unprotected at a public lake simply for lack of a life jacket.

To help protect swimmers in open water, Cook Children’s supports more than 60 Loaner Life Jacket Stations across North Texas. The stations provide five different sizes of U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, ranging from infant to adult, which families can borrow and return free of charge. Each station features educational graphics detailing how to properly fit and secure the vests.

For as long as he could remember, Colton Cupp’s hands always felt wet. His mom, Tiffany Cupp, also noticed his damp footprints across their floors at home and knew something was different. Now 14 years old, Colton has faced daily challenges from hyperhidrosis—until he found the help he needed.

“Since Colton was 3, we tried everything to help him,” Tiffany said. “By the time he was in later elementary school, the sweating got worse. He could literally shake sweat off of his hands.”

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that causes an excessive amount of sweating in areas of the body like the face, palms, underarms and soles of the feet. Colton struggled with his grip in athletics and even writing as pencils would slip through his wet fingers. He also experienced severe and recurrent ingrown toenails to the point where he couldn’t wear shoes.

To help alleviate these hyperhidrosis symptoms, Colton tried medications and other treatments that were either temporary or ineffective. Then one day, in another online search for answers, Tiffany added the word “pediatric,” and it made all the difference. Cook Children’s popped up instantly and everything changed.

“How was this procedure offered 30 minutes down the road from us and we missed it all this time?” Tiffany said. “We immediately researched Dr. Iglesias and after meeting him scheduled Colton’s surgery the following month!”

March 18, 2026 was the day of Colton’s life-changing thoracoscopic sympathectomy surgery with Jose Iglesias, M.D., Medical Director of Pediatric Surgery and his hands have been completely dry since! He’s also noticed his feet are less sweaty and he hasn’t had any issues with his toes.

“I’m thankful for parents who never gave up searching for something to help me and to Dr. Iglesias for being able to change my life,” Colton said. “I thought this was something I was stuck with forever.”

Colton has grown remarkably more self-confident and socially engaged, doing things he never could have before. Learn more about hyperhidrosis and the treatments available at Cook Children’s here: https://www.cookchildrens.org/services/pediatric-surgery/specialty-programs/hyperhidrosis/

As you pass by our blue “peaks,” you might be wondering, what’s with all the construction? It means more room to care for more kids, and expand our services even further! 💙

One year ago today, we broke ground on the site that will soon be a new 760,000-square-foot patient care tower, currently referred to as the West Tower. The addition of the West Tower will enhance Cook Children’s Heart Center and make way for the expansion and redesign of Cook Children’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The West Tower will be a place where Cook Children’s charts new frontiers in medical research, ensuring that every step forward in patient care is informed by the rigorous pursuit of knowledge.

We know construction isn’t always convenient, so we appreciate your patience. To learn more about the latest construction updates, visit https://www.cookchildrens.org/construction 🏗️

As North Texas prepares to host the world's largest soccer tournament, Cook Children’s is stepping onto the pitch for visitors and their little fans. Cook Children’s believes protecting a child’s health starts long before they reach our doors. It starts with prevention.

To help families stay in the game, Cook Children’s is launching . This weekly health series provides local and international visitors with expert safety advice.

Texas spring is an early indicator of summer. While mornings may begin at a mild 60°F, temperatures often quickly rise into the 80s by midday. To ensure the community stays safe as the heat intensifies, Cook Children's Health Care System experts Viviana Esparza, program coordinator for community health, and Sharon Evans, trauma injury prevention manager, are urging families to stay informed. Their goal is simple: preventing hot car tragedies through public awareness.

“Never leave your child alone in a car, not even for a second,” said Evans. “A child's body heats up about three to five times faster than an adult and so the heat really takes a toll on them.”

We are excited to announce that our Neurosciences & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at Cook Children's Medical Center – Fort Worth has been honored with the Diamond Pediatric Nursing Excellence Award by the Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN)! 💙

This recognition celebrates our team’s unwavering commitment to elevating the standards of care and improving the quality of life for our patients and their families. In 2022, the Society of Pediatric Nurses released the Pediatric Nursing Excellence Model. The heart of this model is to ensure pediatric nurses keep developmentally appropriate care as their primary focus within the five established domains of excellence: engagement, values, principles, care delivery, and continuous improvement.

We are so grateful to our nurses for their dedication to excellence and for putting the needs of our patients at the center of everything they do.

May is , a time dedicated to raising awareness about the foster care system. At Cook Children’s, that mission is carried out on a daily basis through a unique program called Fostering Health.

The Cook Children's Fostering Health Program serves more than 2,000 children from across North Texas and as far west as Stephenville. In March, the Clinic helped more than 200 children, a record number for the program.

“Our clinic functions as a primary care medical home and offers complete health care for children in foster care through age 21,” said Brittany Schoonover, pediatric nurse practitioner for the Fostering Health Program. It begins with trauma-informed care.

“We recognize when a child is removed from a home that in itself is trauma,” explained Keirsten Velez, LMSW, a social worker for the Fostering Health Program. “Sometimes we see the child the day after it happens, so our goal is to empower the child.”

That empowerment includes involving children in their own health journey while helping caregivers navigate the foster care system.
