“We refer to the torso as the pillar- it’s the structural center of movement and life. The way we maintain that pillar and its alignment and function directly correlate to the health of our organs and the rest of our bodies…If you think of the body as a wheel, the pillar is the hub, and the limbs, the spokes. We want to have the hub perfectly aligned so we can draw energy from it and effectively transfer energy throughout the body…If you have good pillar strength and take a step, force will pass evenly through your foot, calf, and hip- right up the pillar and through the top of your head. If you lack pillar strength, specifically hip stability, the energy “leaks out” at the hip, and the body must compensate. More pressure is placed down toward the knees and up toward the lower back, which over time can cause degenerative problems.” (Verstegen)

Exclusive Breast Feeding Reduces Conduct Disorders in Children.

A study that included over 1,500
children found that children who exclusively breastfed during their first six months of life were less likely to have behavioral
problems during childhood than those who breastfed for less than six months or not at all.

Post-Stroke Cognitive Impairment Greater Among Patients with Depression and Type 2 Diabetes.

In a recent study that included 342 post-stroke patients, researchers found those with either depression or type 2 diabetes were twice as likely to develop cognitive impairments as the post-stroke patients in the study without a history of either condition. Additionally, patients with both depressive symptoms and type 2 diabetes had more than a 300% greater risk of cognitive impairments following a stroke.

Fruit Compounds Could Be Used to Treat Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and CVD.

A supplement consisting of compounds derived from red grapes and oranges may offer a promising new treatment for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Researchers investigated the effects of a compound called trans-resveratrol (tRES), found in red grapes, and a compound found in oranges called hesperetin (HESP). The team found that participants with a BMI of more than 27.5 who took a supplement with these compounds experienced a reduction in insulin levels, improved insulin activity, better artery function, and reduced blood vessel inflammation. Study leader Dr. Paul Thornalley adds, "This is an incredibly exciting development and could have a massive impact on our ability to treat these diseases. As well as helping to treat diabetes and heart disease it could defuse the obesity time bomb."

Could 60 Seconds of Exercise Offer Benefits?

Researchers from Canada's McMaster University contend that just one minute of high-intensity exercise can boost some aspects of health as much as 45 minutes of moderate exercise can. The study included 27 inactive men who were randomly assigned to perform three sessions per week of either intense exercise that involved three 20-second sprints separated by two minutes of low intensity recovery time or 45 minutes of moderate exercise. The control group did not exercise. After 12 weeks, both exercise groups had similar improvements in regards to heart/lung fitness and insulin sensitivity, a measure of how the body regulates blood sugar, that were not observed in the control group. Study author Dr. Martin Gibala adds, "Our study shows that an interval-based [intense] approach can be more efficient—you can get health and fitness benefits comparable to the traditional approach, in less time."

I think this is interesting, but let us all strive for more than 60 secs!

Quitting Smoking Helps Those with Mental Health Challenges.

In this study, researchers introduced smoking cessation into the treatment plans of veterans undergoing care for a mental health issue and found those who stopped smoking had better physical and mental function six months later. The authors of the study conclude, "Providers should recommend and provide to***co treatment to all mental health patients to improve their physical and mental health functioning."

Specific Low Back Exercises Reduce Chronic Low Back Pain.

Doctors of chiropractic often prescribe exercise to be performed in-office or at home as part of a treatment program for patients with musculoskeletal conditions, like back pain. A recent study examined the role of lumbar extensor muscle strengthening for individuals with chronic low back pain. In the study, individuals with persistent low back pain for a minimum of two years participated in an eleven-week lumbar extensor strength training program once per week. The findings revealed that specific lumbar strengthening resulted in clinically relevant improvements in pain (a 28% decrease) and functional disability (a 23% to 36% decrease) in patients with persistent chronic low back pain. The study shows the importance of the role that specific exercises play in the management of chronic low back pain.

Exercise: Dark Chocolate May Boost Athletic Performance.
A flavanol in the cocoa bean and in dark chocolate called epicatechin increases the production of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide causes blood vessels to dilate and reduces oxygen consumption, which experts say can help athletes to maintain their pace for longer. In this study, cyclists either consumed a daily allotment of dark chocolate that was rich in flavanols or white chocolate. After two weeks, the cyclists performed a series of cycling exercise tests. The researchers found that the riders who ate dark chocolate used less oxygen when cycling at a moderate pace than to those who given white chocolate and they also traveled further in a two-minute flat-out time trial.

Exercise: Endurance Running = Stronger Bones.
The longer the race an individual trains for, the greater their bone quality. In this study, researchers performed bone density tests on the feet of 122 marathon runners, 81 half marathon runners and 10K runners, and a group of sedentary adults who served as a control group. The findings revealed the runners all had greater bone density in their heels than those in the control group, with greater density among those who trained for longer races. The findings suggest that training for endurance races can possibly prevent the progressive decline in bone mineral quality that occurs with age.

Chiropractic: More Chiropractors, Less Opioids.
Based on data collected in 2011, a new study has found an association between both a higher per-capita supply of chiropractors and Medicare spending on chiropractic care and lower opioid prescription use among younger, disabled Medicare beneficiaries. Opioids are a type of narcotic pain medication that can have serious side effects and can lead to abuse and dependence. The finding suggests that chiropractic care may help reduce the need for this potentially dangerous class of medication.

So, she has at least 40-50 lbs of unnecessary pressure.
