For me, December 27th is the anniversary of not one, but two of those markers in my life’s timeline.

Exactly 18 years ago today, I had my spinal fusion surgery. I wouldn’t wish such an intense surgery and recovery process on anyone, but I can honestly say I am glad it has led me to where I am today: helping others navigate the journey, and continuing to heal alongside them in this amazing community of scoliosis and fusion warriors.

And 7 years ago today, I officially completed my final Pilates instructor test out. I chose the date VERY intentionally. Finishing my comprehensive certification was a milestone in reclaiming my body’s story, and I was determined to reclaim December 27th as a victorious day on my own calendar for every year thereafter.

This date will always and forever be important in my story, but 18 years ago, I never could have guessed I’d have so many reasons—both personal and beyond myself— to celebrate this date.

I am deeply, deeply grateful.

December so far:

✨ Making the studio (and my house!) extra cozy for the holidays
🏃‍♀️ Finishing my 10th race of the year with a snow globe medal… how cute is that?!
☕ Trying a new crock pot hot chocolate recipe (and discovering that Poppy LOVES mini marshmallows)
🎉 Celebrating with our staff instructor, Casey… her sweet baby girl is a year old!
🧘‍♀️ Session swapping with Mary Beth (her approach is *chef’s kiss*)
🎙️ Being a guest on Backtalk with the Bionic Project

It’s been a good month. Hope yours has been too. 🎄

My last client of the day just left, and as she walked out the door, she said, “Hey, thanks for putting up with all my extra aches and pains and moans and groans today.”

And I told her: “That’s literally what I’m here for.”

Because it is. I’m here to adjust your session to where your body is TODAY.

In her case? She’d done an intense strength workout the day before, and soreness was complicating her mobility big time. So we moved the footbar. We adjusted resistance. We offered her knees a supportive prop.

This is why I use a modification-rich approach instead of forcing everyone into “traditional” exercises.

You never know when you might be better served by a modified version (and by the way, modified is not “lesser than,” so let’s put the kabosh on that right now).

Sometimes a modification helps you sense the work differently, or target a different muscle group. It’s not always about making something “easier.” It’s about maximizing an exercise’s benefits for YOUR unique body.

Whether you’re dealing with a fusion, an injury, or just the aftermath of leg day, modifications empower everyone. They give you options that actually feel GOOD.
