Unshame NC is a statewide anti-stigma project that brings us today's post:

April Black was first impacted by substance use disorder as a child, growing up in a home where substances were present and spending time in foster care. That experience motivated her to earn a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and devote nearly two decades to social services, serving in both child welfare and adult protective services at the county and state level.

Her mission deepened when she lost her firstborn daughter, Genesis “Lana” Love, at age 22 to fentanyl poisoning. Out of her grief came an unshakable resolve to transform pain into purpose—fighting stigma, amplifying unheard voices, and affirming that every life holds value.

April credits her faith in Jesus Christ as the foundation of her life and ministry, carrying forward the truth that we overcome through God’s grace and by boldly sharing our stories.

Addiction is lonely and hard; recovery does not need to be. You are not alone and you can have help. You do need to ask for it and be willing to receive it. Are you ready?

What is an opioid overdose look like? Pinpoint pupils, blue/purple lips or fingernails, gurgling noises, shallow breathing, and inability to wake up. Narcan is a magical drug that can completely reverse an overdose almost immediately. The US Surgeon General recommends every household have Narcan in their first aid kit, as an average citizen is more likely to reverse an overdose than to ever use CPR in their lifetime.

Opioids 101: Opioids are a large class of drugs that moderate pain. Names of opioids with medical uses include Codeine, Fentanyl, Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, Meperidine, Morphine, Oxycodone, Tramadol, and others. Opioids with primarily illicit uses in the US include He**in, Nitazenes, Carfentanil, O***m, and others. Finally, there is an opioid that everyone reading this post has manufactured in their own brain: Endorphine. It is important to know that all of these drugs are nearly identical at the molecular level, i.e. they are extremely similar in what they do and only vary from each other in intensity and duration of effect.

Good news! After recorded overdose deaths peaked at 107,941 in 2022, they decreased slightly to 105,007 deaths recorded in 2023. In 2024, that number dropped to 79,384—a decrease of 26.2 percent, bringing the mortality rate from 31.3 deaths per 100,000 people down to 23.1. We are finally- finally!- making a significant reduction in the number of people dying from opioid overdose!
