To celebrate Pride Month, I want to focus on the mental health resources available for LGBTQ+ individuals. Recently, I had a person inquire why it was beneficial for LGBTQ+ persons to have a mental health hotline that was specific to them rather than included in the resources of the general population. Good question, sad answer. Based on the feedback over the last 10 years with clients and friends who are LGBTQ+, due to a lack of training, not all hotline volunteers or even counselors are understanding or fully supportive. This reinforces the loneliness and feelings of abandonment that are often the root of the hotline call.
So first resource of the month is THE TREVOR PROJECT. This is a non-profit that provides chat and phone support. It includes self-regulation resources and more. Check it out.
