The narrative we are seeing in the media is painting home birth in a dangerous light. The reality? Research shows that for most people home is often the safest place to birth with lower intervention rates (so less forcep, ventouse, episiotomies), lower risk of infection, haemorrhage, the list goes on!

We need to ask ourselves why home birth is always in the spotlight? Why It’s painted as dangerous or risky when the statistics show in most cases the opposite? Of course there are some heartbreaking situations where someone will have a devastating complication during their home birth but these are reported heavily whilst all the much more frequent tragedies that unfold in hospitals aren’t reported in the same way…

It is fear mongering in the most unhelpful way. We need empowering, evidence-based information so people can make individualised choices that are right for them. We do not need to try and put everyone in the same box.

Cord clamping shouldn’t happen until the cord is white and has completely stopped pulsing.
ACOG recommends waiting at least 30 to 60 seconds before cutting the cord, which is a good start. But if the cord is still pulsing and still has color, that means blood, oxygen, iron, stem cells, and immune cells are still being delivered to your baby.
That process doesn’t always finish in 60 seconds. Sometimes it takes several minutes. Sometimes it takes longer. Every baby is different, and the cord should be the guide, not the clock.
When we wait until the cord is white and limp, we know the baby has received everything that was meant for them. Their blood volume, oxygen levels, and iron stores are supported exactly as designed.
Clamping too soon cuts off that transfer, leaving part of the baby’s blood supply still inside the placenta instead of in their body where it belongs.
Your baby only gets one chance to receive their full blood volume after birth. Waiting until the cord is white makes sure they do.
