We pause to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr, a towering figure in the fight for civil rights, economic justice, and political inclusion.

For decades, Rev. Jackson stood at the forefront of movements demanding that Black communities be seen, heard, and valued. Through the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, he championed voter access, corporate accountability, labor rights, and expanded opportunity for Black Americans.

For Black women, his work intersected with broader fights for equity, in healthcare, employment, education, and political representation. He consistently pushed institutions to recognize that justice must include those historically marginalized and underestimated.

His legacy is rooted in advocacy, coalition building, and the belief that collective action can reshape systems. 💜

🎤🪘 COME SEE McKENNA TAKE THE STAGE WITH LIVE POETRY & PERCUSSION 🪘🎤

At just 13 years old, McKenna Massaquoi returns to the Seed to Roots stage for her fourth year, and her creative energy continues to grow. A homeschool student with boundless talent, McKenna’s passions span singing, dancing, drumming, theatre, visual arts, and beyond. Wherever she goes, she brings joy, confidence, and a spark that lights up the room.

This year, McKenna presents a solo performance honoring the enduring legacy of Black literary excellence. Inspired by Langston Hughes’ “I Too” and Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise,” her piece is not a simple recitation, but a creative reimagining developed alongside a close circle of friends, including fellow Seed to Roots alum Faith.
Joining her onstage will be her musical teacher and mentor, Ayanna Gallant of Aya Cultural Music Studios, who will accompany the performance with live drumming which adds rhythm, depth, and power to the piece.

This is poetry, movement, and music woven together in a way only McKenna can deliver.

Seed to Roots 2026 • Official Countdown

📖 MEET OUR STORYTELLERS: CAMERON, MICHELLE & NOAH 📖

These three students aren’t just performing, but bringing history back to life.

Cameron James, Michelle Gallegos, and Noah Butler are leading a powerful storytelling piece rooted right here in Middletown, Maryland and Frederick County history. Through journals, narration, and projected visuals, they tell the story of Joseph Butler, an enslaved man who purchased his own freedom for $5 and then worked to free his family long before the country caught up.

Their performance connects Middletown and Little Africa, South Mountain and the Civil War happening within sight of home, lost graves and forgotten names, and the idea that young people today may be the very dreams their ancestors never got to see.

This is not a reenactment.
It is a narrative performance told in their own voices. Curious, honest, and grounded in real research and local history.

At the heart of it all is one question.
What happens when young people choose to remember?
