Did you know German Chocolate Cake isn't German? The "German" in the name refers to Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate, the type chocolate originally used to make the cake.

The chocolate was named after Samuel German, who created it for Baker's Chocolate Company in 1852.

The popular chocolate layer cake with coconut-pecan topping came along much later, likely originating in Texas in the 1950s.

This newspaper ad for the chocolate comes from 1885. See it in the Chicago Tribune on our site: https://www.newspapers.com/article/chicago-tribune-1885-ad-for-bakers-germ/79146582/
