Fall back 🥱

⏰ The most dreaded time change with babies and young children, but it doesn’t have to be!

Here are some tips to follow to ease into the time change to keep baby on schedule as best as possible

Since we go to sleep an hour later than what our body’s internal clock is used to, you should put baby to bed 10-15 minutes later (including naps too) each day leading up to the time change.
By the time the time change happens, they’ll be just about adjusted to going to sleep later and on track with the new time

Example of a schedule for a child that typically has a 7pm bedtime (follow for their nap schedule as well):

Day 1: 7pm
Day 2: 7:15pm
Day 3: 7:30pm
Day 4: 7:45pm
Day 5: 8:00pm
*on the night when the clocks go back, 8pm will now be 7pm

Although you will have helped your child to adjust as best as you can, it can still take up to a week for baby to fully adjust.

Helpful tips:
🖤black out shades in your child’s room
❤️ give your child time and some grace to adjust. Even if you don’t follow these steps leading up to the time change, within a week of the time change they will adjust

If you’re still having problems with early wake-ups (any wake up before 6am is considered an early wake up) feel free to reach out!

You got this mama! (And dadas too!)

Sometimes we have activities to do or events to go to that coincide with nap time...there are ways to do both!

We ventured out to the zoo early this morning before it got super hot. While there it was Nico’s morning nap time, so I turned on the white noise app on my phone, lowered the shade on his stroller, and off he drifted to sleep!

He slept a solid 30-45 minutes which is a good enough catnap to hold him over until his afternoon nap. Because of the short morning nap, I will put him to bed a littler earlier tonight to make up for some of that lost sleep.

Babies and toddlers miss naps, or have shortened naps and that’s okay! Go to that birthday party, the zoo, or swimming with family. On those days try to get baby down for bedtime earlier than usual and he will be just fine!

🧳Traveling with babies and toddlers and feeling a little stressed? I have some sleep tips for you so it can be less stressful, and you can focus on the fun and memories you are making!

⏰Don't stress too much about baby's schedule BUT do aim for at least one good nap a day in a dark, cool room with continuous white noise. Try to recreate baby's home sleep environment as much as possible.

🏖Catnaps in the stroller or baby carrier, or even on the beach is better than nothing!

⚫️There are portable window blackout blind shades you can purchase on Amazon to turn any room dark. (Product in my stories)

⚫️There is also a product I personally love called The Slumber Pod It's a tent that goes right over most playards to create complete blackout, and even has a designated spot for a monitor. I highly recommend it if you plan on traveling. (This product is not recommended for outdoor use, only indoor use)

😴Try to get baby to bed somewhat close to their regular bedtime, especially after a busy day. But don't stress over putting baby to sleep exactly at their normal bedtime.

😊Overall, have fun, enjoy your trip, and within a few days of being home baby will be right back on track with his schedule!👶🏻: sweet baby Mateo 💙

No matter how “sleep-trained” a baby is, sometimes they just need to fall asleep in mama’s arms. Maybe they’re not feeling well, teething, going through a leap, or they sense Mama needs the snuggles just as much as they do. Whatever the reason is it is the best feeling, and it won’t mess up any sleep training progress that has been made. I relish in these moments and enjoy every second of my baby sleeping in my arms 🥰

⏰ Are early wakeups a problem for you and baby? Any wakeup that happens before at least 10 hours of sleep is considered an early wakeup.
There are a few things that can cause this.
🥱Being overtired can absolutely cause early morning wakings! Putting baby to bed later will not help with early wakeups; it actually has the opposite effect. An overtired baby will have more sleep disruptions.
🕖If your baby or toddler is waking up early, start with an earlier bedtime.
Make sure baby is getting an age appropriate amount of daytime and nighttime sleep. If baby takes a shorter nap or misses a nap ALWAYS go for an earlier bedtime.
👣 Babies and toddlers go through so many developmental leaps in the first 3 years which can also cause sleep disruptions
Make sure not to start new bad habits during this time. Be patient with baby and know that if you are consistent with your schedule it will pass!
And I cannot say this enough….an earlier bedtime NEVER hurts 😊

Why Sleep Train?
😴 We all know how important sleep is. Proper rest is important for our health and well-being, and babies are no different. Establishing healthy sleep habits sets your baby up to sleep well not just as a baby, but as a toddler and into their childhood. A rested baby is a happy baby, and that makes for a happy mama (and a happy dad, too!)
If you are having troubles getting your baby to sleep sometimes a few simple tweaks is all it takes. As babies and toddlers grow their sleep needs change. I would love to help you with any of your baby’s sleep troubles. We can get your baby to sleep through the night and on an age appropriate nap schedule. Give me all the snuggles and cuddles 🤱
I may not rock my babies all the way to sleep (although there are exceptions to this such as a sick baby, teething baby, baby needs a little extra mama love, or mama needs a little extra baby love)
But I snuggle them, cuddle them, and rock them every day. I just put them down before their little eyes are closed and they fall asleep independently in their crib.
Some people think sleep training means no more rocking, cuddling or snuggling. This couldn’t be further from the truth. You still get to do all of those things plus baby falls asleep independently in their crib and gets good rest (and so does mama!)
😴I’d love to help you get your baby to fall asleep independently and to sleep through the night.

⏰ Spring Forward!
🌸Time change is great...when you don’t have kids 🤪
Luckily this time change isn’t as difficult as Fall Back. But, to get baby on track with the time change you can shift baby’s schedule beginning now! If your baby is super sensitive start tomorrow by doing everything 10 minutes earlier each day until you reach the full hour at the end of the week.
For example,
⏰Tuesday typical 7am wake up change to ➡️ 6:50 wake up (follow suit with the rest of the day’s schedule)
⏰Wednesday 6:40am
⏰Thursday 6:30am
⏰Friday 6:20am
⏰Saturday 6:10am
🕖Sunday 7:00am

If your baby is not that sensitive to change then you can shift the schedule by 15 or 20 minutes for just a few days leading up to the time change.
🤯If you are super busy and life is crazy, you can always do the shifting the week of the time change.

💕Either way, give baby (and yourself) a week or so to adjust. Time change is never easy on anyone, especially babies.

⚫️And use those blackout shades so baby goes to sleep at his normal bedtime! 👶🏻: Nico

Let’s talk Nap Transitions! How do I know my baby is ready for a nap transition?
You will know it's time for baby to drop a nap when you see these signs for at least a week straight:
👶🏻Naps get shorter and shorter
👶🏻Baby is taking longer to fall asleep for naps or is difficult to get to sleep
👶🏻Baby refuses to nap
👶🏻Baby is waking earlier than usual in the mornings

These are the time frames when a nap transition is about to happen:
4️⃣-5️⃣ months babies will drop to 3 naps
7️⃣-8️⃣ months babies will drop to 2 naps
1️⃣5️⃣-1️⃣8️⃣ months babies will drop to 1 nap
👦🏻Toddlers will nap past the age of 3. Don’t mistake toddler resistance for a nap transition 🤪

🕕When baby drops a nap, do an earlier bedtime for at least a week while baby adjusts. It won’t be perfect right away so give baby and yourself some grace!

Let’s talk toddlers! 🧒🏻👧🏼
Toddlers are fun, full of energy, and are learning about their ability to be independent. This is great for them, but can be challenging for us parents 🤪 This can cause disruptions to nighttime sleep, as well as naptime and bedtime struggles.
🎁 Luckily, rewards work very well for toddlers. You can reward your toddler in the morning if they go to bed without protesting or if they stay in bed all night (this can also apply for naptime), or you can use a sticker chart that once it is filled they get the chosen reward.
If you are still having trouble with your toddler’s sleep I can help. Toddlers are a little more challenging than babies but getting them to sleep can definitely be done and I would love to help you do that!

About Angel Baby Sleep Consulting

My name is Christina Tomasello and I am a wife to Rick, and a mama to the two sweetest boys, Gino and Nico. I am a former preschool and elementary school teacher turned stay at home mom. My passions have always been to work with children, and to help people. After successfully sleep training my first born with the help of a sleep consultant, I decided I wanted to help other mamas to do the same thing. I became a certified infant and toddler sleep consultant through the Institute of Pediatric Sleep and Parenting. My goal is to help mamas get their babies to fall asleep independently to give everyone the gift of sleep.
