"A Journey of Resilience: From Challenges to Triumphs"
I am deeply honored to be running for the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the largest and most prestigious organization for family physicians in the country. Being a member of the AAFP has been a privilege, and actively contributing to the field of family medicine is a mission that I hold close to my heart. As I look to the future, I’m excited about the opportunity to expand my goals and serve a broader, more diverse community of members, patients, and families.
Who Am I:
I come from a humble, middle-class family in India, surrounded by the wisdom and strength of remarkable individuals. My mother, a beacon of discipline and hard work, showed me the power of perseverance. My father, a role model of ethics and integrity, instilled in me the values that guide my every decision. My grandfather, a retired dean and my first and best teacher ignited my love for learning, while my older sister, a symbol of courage and innovation, taught me a lesson that has shaped my life: “No one can make you feel inferior without your permission.”
This mantra, shared with me when I was just 15, has been my anchor through every challenge I’ve faced. Growing up as one of three girls in India, we often heard the discouraging words, “Get your girls married; don’t waste money on their education.” My mother, however, took this as a challenge, and her determination turned us into strong, educated women.
I am proud to be the first physician in my family. The strength I derived from their unwavering support fueled my desire to grow stronger and aim higher. During my medical school years in India, I worked with confidence among my peers, thanks to the values my family instilled in me. Flourishing in a traditionally challenging environment where disparities and inequalities exist wasn’t easy, but I was determined to pave my way and leave a positive mark on my medical journey.
When I moved to the United States, I brought with me big dreams and even bigger goals. But the challenges didn’t disappear—they simply shifted. Adapting to a new country with a different language and healthcare system was a challenge in itself, especially being thousands of miles away from home.
But a place truly becomes home when you win the hearts of the people you work with and meet. That’s what kept me going and what continues to drive me today.
As I run for the AAFP Board of Directors, I carry these lessons with me. I’m here to represent resilience, determination, and the belief that every challenge can be transformed into an opportunity.
