❤️❤️ ❤️3 Gentle Ways to Communicate with Someone Living with Dementia ❤️❤️❤️
There is no perfect script - how we communicate matters just as much as what we say.
Here are three gentle approaches we use every day that make a big difference at your home, too.
1. RESPOND TO THE FEELINGS, NOT THE WORDS ❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
If a loved one says something that isn’t quite accurate, try not to correct them right away. Instead, listen for the emotion behind the words.
Maybe they are anxious? Missing someone? Feeling unsure?
A simple response like, “That sounds upsetting. I’m here with you,” can bring far more comfort than explaining why they’re wrong.
2. FEWER WORDS, MORE PATIENCE 💖💖💖
Dementia can make language feel like too much. We slow down. We keep sentences short. We give plenty of time to respond.
And when someone is non-verbal, we watch closely—hands clenching, pacing, facial expressions, changes in energy. Those are still messages. They’re just spoken differently now.
3. LET YOUR PRESENCE SPEAK LOUDER 💞💞💞
A smile. Eye contact. Sitting at their level. A reassuring touch on the hand (when welcomed).
For many non-verbal residents, these moments says so much more than language. Even when words fade, connection remains.
If this resonated with you, feel free save it for later. If you’re walking this journey with someone you love, know that you’re not alone. We are here - doors and hearts open.
