Discipline (also known as Tapas, one of the five Niyamas) is one of my weaknesses. Outside of showing up for work consistently or nourishing myself with healthy foods, I struggle to keep a regular workout or training schedule (that even applies to finding my way to the mat).
I especially struggled with consistency while traveling full-time over the past year. The scenery was constantly changing, and the exhaustion and anxiety brought on by traveling solo were enough to keep me from maintaining a routine of any sort.
The anxiety is the worst part for me. I know a large portion of it was brought on by traveling, and I bet another portion of it was due to peri and post-menopause (yep, even at the young age of 48). Before I started traveling, I could sit still for hours without picking my split ends or endlessly scrolling through an obscene amount of ads that don't apply to me. Now, I struggle to focus, I struggle to sit still, and meditating is just not possible right now.
Fast forward to today, I'm living a stationary life where the ground stays fixed and my family and friends are a short drive away. AND I started teaching yoga in-person again, which helps me in so many ways, from building community to feeling grounded to sharing my love of yoga.
This means I can finally reestablish a deep connection to my body, to my inner knowing, to the endless flow of source energy, and to feel grounded and at peace again. Ah, it's been way too long!
If you're struggling to sit still or are unable to focus, movement is your friend. No matter what kind. I find that doing some form of movement before I sit down for work helps me focus. So, get up and move that body!
