Mayo Clinic researchers — in collaboration with University of Florida experts — have identified a noninvasive imaging biomarker that could help diagnose DLB earlier and more accurately using free-water diffusion MRI.

💬 “We need better, noninvasive biomarker tests that patients can access easily,” said neurologist Dr. Shannon Chiu, who began her research training under UF’s Dr. David Vaillancourt, a pioneer in using free-water imaging in Parkinson’s disease.

This work could pave the way for earlier diagnosis and better clinical trial readiness for one of the most commonly misdiagnosed forms of dementia.

A new case series from Dr. Matthew Remz and the Fixel Institute challenges assumptions about deep brain stimulation (DBS) in DYT-11, a rare genetic movement disorder. Despite DBS’s high success rate, some patients don’t respond as expected—so the Fixel team asked why, and more importantly, what can be done?

Through advanced troubleshooting and even surgical revision, they found answers that could reshape care far beyond UF Health. This is the first documented case series of its kind.

📖 Read how clinical curiosity led to breakthroughs—and what it could mean for the future of DBS:

A generous gift from the RMS Family Foundation is fully supporting a two-year movement disorders fellowship at the Fixel Institute—allowing Dr. Dan Fenn to train without financial burden and focus entirely on patients, research, and advancing care.

For Dr. Randy Schilsky, founder of the RMS Family Foundation and a person living with Parkinson’s, investing in fellowship training is personal. It’s about fueling earlier diagnoses, better treatments, and more hopeful futures.

💙 This is what it means to make an impact.
