UF Health Shands was designated by the state as a Level 1 Trauma Center in July 2005 and later verified by the American College of Surgeons(ACS) as a Level 1 Trauma Center in December 2018. ACS verification is a voluntary measure for certified Level I Trauma Centers aiming to meet additional levels of excellence in trauma care for patients. ent patient care through the combination of these five components: Level 1 Trauma center, Emergency preparedness, Flight services, Communications/dispatch, Trauma prevention and education. The ACS requires that a Level 1 Trauma Center meet the following criteria:
*24-hour in-house coverage by general surgeons, and prompt availability of
care in specialties such as orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology,
emergency medicine, radiology, internal medicine, plastic surgery, oral and
maxillofacial, pediatric and critical care.
*Referral resource for communities in nearby regions.
*Provides leadership in prevention, public education to surrounding
communities.
*Provides continuing education of the trauma team members.
*Incorporates a comprehensive quality assessment program.
*Operates an organized teaching and research effort to help direct new
innovations in trauma care.
*Program for substance abuse screening and patient intervention.

UF Health Shands Trauma Center includes 10 UF Health board-certified trauma surgeons, four pediatric trauma surgeons, four state-of-the-art resuscitation bays, a designated operating room and a 24-bed trauma intensive care unit. In addition, trauma patients have quick access to imaging services and the expertise of a full team of UF Health specialists.
