At the Lake City VAMC, Chaplain Richardson, Chaplain Prentiss, and the MICU staff came together to honor Mr. William Cu***ng, a 102-year-old World War II Veteran. In recognition of both his service and his remarkable age, he was presented with a Navy hat, a handmade quilt, and special tokens of appreciation. Surrounded by gratitude and care, Mr. Cu***ng and his wife were deeply touched by the tribute, a meaningful reminder of the legacy and sacrifice of Veterans. 🇺🇸💓

Emily, a nurse in our Acute Care Department, has been named the April 2026 DAISY Award recipient for turning a Veteran’s final wish into a meaningful reality. When a 91-year-old Veteran shared that he hoped to go fishing one last time, Emily created a simple but powerful moment, crafting a handmade fishing pole, cutting out fish from paper and “catching” catfish together right from his hospital room.

Shortly after returning home, the Veteran passed away. His family shared deep gratitude for the joy Emily brought to his final days, giving him one last chance to experience something he loved.
What may have seemed small became a lasting memory during an incredibly meaningful time. This is care that goes beyond medicine, it is dignity, connection, and humanity.
