Last night during our last TCTSY session, as we discussed the changes and shifts that happened over the 8 weeks, I could feel butterflies of excitement in my stomach!

The common theme from both groups was an overall increase in feeling “safe” or “comfortable” moving their bodies- within themselves and within a group of people. Safety is a felt sense in the body, so hearing that tells me that some progress was made! For some of the participants, safety is not something they’ve known or thought they could experience, so that is a REALLY big deal! It made my heart warm 💖

I’ve been feeling a little over-extended lately, so I’ll be honest, it was hard to make it there every week this round. But right now, I’m feeling grateful that I get to do this work and support others in their healing. I also benefit deeply from the TCTSY practice and can notice a bit more regulation in my system today! Win-win ✨

After a traumatic event or a traumatic life, survivors might have only a very fragmented narrative of what happened or no clear story at all. Many survivors say, “I don’t remember anything,” without realizing that they are remembering when they suddenly startle, feel afraid, tighten up, pull back, feel shame or self-hatred, or start to tremble.

Because trauma is remembered emotionally and somatically more than it is remembered in a narrative form that can be expressed verbally, survivors often feel confused, overwhelmed, or crazy. Without a memory in words or pictures, they do not recognize what they are feeling as memory.

Most people are unaware of all these different ways of remembering, even though they are all too familiar with the experience of suddenly getting anxious or angry for no apparent reason. When they are triggered, they do not realize that what they are experiencing is a memory. They know the warm feeling that is connected to thinking about loved ones or the pulling back or bracing that occurs when they encounter someone who feels threatening.

My setup at for my Thursday trauma sensitive yoga group. Participants come in and are free to set up their mats wherever they want to. I have flameless candles all over to help with the vibes 🕯️

It’s been different doing my yoga groups at therapy offices rather than yoga studios, BUT different in a good way!

Lots of healing vibes in these spaces where people come together to help each other grow and heal 💕

I’m so grateful to be doing this work in the community!

I have! I notice as I’m able to learn to tolerate anxiety, grief, and sadness, I’ve also been able to allow more joy and just overall feeling “lighter”! 💡

These pleasant emotions involve similar circuits of the nervous system, so when you try to shut one down, you effectively shut down the other. 😱

Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is a very gentle form of yoga created just for survivors of trauma. The practice is focused on you connecting with your body in the present moment, empowering you to make choices in your body, while being gently guided by the facilitator (me!).

This is a non judgmental space where performance is not necessary, all are welcome 🩵
