THE DAY AFTER

“I want to walk away from this the day after knowing I gave him a beautiful life”

My beloved Peter passed away peacefully last night surrounded by so much love. He is free of her horrendous grip, for that I am relieved.

My heart is broken, but I have no regrets.
My heart is broken, but I will find Joy in our memories.
I’m the luckiest girl in the world.
Peter gave me a beautiful life.

Much Love,
Lisa and Peter

Some Nurses are enjoying the empty highways this morning as they make their way to do deliver care. Some Nurses show up at work on holidays because they know, there are Patients, Residents, Clients, Mothers, Fathers, Children, Spouses, Brothers, Sisters, Humans; may be lonely, that may be scared...Some Nurses bring more with them than medications when they come into a space, or a room....Some Nurses bring things that can't be put into a package. Some Nurses bring invisible things that only hearts can feel. There is no holiday pay, overtime pay or shift differential that can compensate for that GIFT. .nurse

Peter's wife shares with us moment by moment their journey.. inside the life of a caregiver.

AFTER THE STAIRCASE

Amanda and I said goodbye to our sweet Hospice aide as she went on to her next patient. Later in the morning Peter’s Hospice nurse came to visit. The Sons had come and gone, and so had the afternoon and the entire day felt fuzzy. I wandered around aimlessly without purpose for most of it. I cried several times and just couldn’t really get going at all.

I decided to go upstairs and was unprepared for what I found.

The bed that Peter would never sleep in again.

The bathroom, just the way we left it after his bath. We would not bathe him there again.

His big, oversized beach blanket I would wrap him in after his bath, slung over the railing.

The wet washcloth I had used to wash him.

The office where my bed had been for the past 8 months.

Those damn bells on his bedroom door.

The grief washed over me. Reality settling in.

Peter has been in manic distress these past few months, agitated and anxious and combative and angry and pacing, truly horrific to watch. Exhausting to handle.

I found comfort knowing he is calm now, and I breathed in the relief. And as I did, I think the house actually took a deep breath, too.

Much Love,
Lisa and Peter

THE GIFT OF HOSPICE FOR THANKSGIVING

I spent so much time focusing and wondering if Peter would qualify for hospice that I didn’t take the time to prepare.

Prepare my heart.

My brain understands what a lovely and valuable gift of support we’ve been given but my heart is still a little numb.

It’s as if my brain is quietly whispering to my heart “hey. Psst. This is kind of a big deal, are you ok?” but my heart isn’t quite ready to hear it.

Peter will remain at home and part of me feels as though I’ve reached the top of the mountain. Now I’ll catch my breath.

The hardest work is done. The saddest yet to come.

Today. I’m Thankful for my Beautiful loving husband, our incredible friends and family and our new hospice family. I know we’re not alone, and feel lifted by your unwavering support.

I’m grateful to be so loved and have so many joyful memories to keep me company.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families. Hug them tight. Then hug them again.

Much Love,

Lisa and Peter

IN PLAIN SIGHT

Peter has been fixated on the front door lately, which can be concerning. While we have 3 locks on every outside door, Alzheimer’s is unpredictable, and humans are human and things happen.

While visiting adult daycare centers last Spring, I was introduced to this incredible concept! Simply covering the door with a decal that appears to be bookshelves has completely deterred Peter from the door.

There are lots of choices on Amazon!

Much Love,
Lisa and Peter
