Allow yourself to go through many different emotions during your time of grief. There's no time limit but the manner in which you grieve may definitely affect how complicated and lengthy it could be for you.

For many who are finding it difficult to come to terms with the results of this election, this should be treated as a loss. Why not approach the significance of this disappointment as such? You are already experiencing symptoms that have left you feeling irritable, angry, hurt, and in disbelief. To go through a healthy grieving process, first permit yourself to verbalize this anger preferably with someone who is close to you, who understands you, and is nonjudgemental towards you. You might blame others for not practicing their right to vote or Hillary's campaign manager for a strategy that deemed less than effective. It's okay to do this with the mindset that you will not allow yourself to stay in this negative mindset. Instead you will find your purpose in this result that you did not create or contribute to, an outcome that you were helpless in. You may decide to recommit to the political process in a local manner, getting to know the political figures who have a more closer and intimate impact on your community, attend school board meetings...etc. You are on your way to acceptance which is the goal for any type of loss experienced...but through the process, you emerge a bit more enlightened and encouraged that you can still effect change.

The therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in counseling outcomes. It is not the race of your therapist, nor the gender, nor the sexual orientation. How does that therapist make you feel? Like you are understood? listened too? Heard without judgment? Accepted? We have so much work to do together in counseling...You are not alone!
