Why is pointing so important? A child who is pointing well:
• is able to imitate simple gestures
• can get an adult’s attention
• can tell an adult what they need or want (even without words)
• can share their interests with others

Though most parents and professionals know that babies walk around their first birthday, few realize that pointing is a skill that also emerges at 12 to 15 months of age. While every child develops at their own pace, a child who is not walking by 18 months is almost always referred for an evaluation, but a child who is not pointing at 18 months is rarely referred.

A lack of pointing at 18 months can be an early sign of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Pointing is one skill that we look for during a diagnostic evaluation. Does the child point to things they are not touching? Do they point to ask for things? Do they point to show things to others? Do they combine pointing with eye contact? Do they combine pointing with vocalizations?

If you have concerns about your child’s development, trust your instincts! Private evaluation services are available. Reach out for a consultation to discuss your concerns.

Even though many parents begin to have concerns about their child at 12 to 18 months of age, most children do not receive a diagnosis of Autism until after age 4!

Too often, children who show characteristics of Autism fail to be referred for additional testing. When concerns are identified, diagnostic testing may not be authorized or performed in a timely manner, with long wait times common.

YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD BEST!

If your child is showing behaviors of concern and you are worried about Autism, don’t delay or “wait and see”. Private evaluation services are available.

We have tools to reliably diagnose Autism before age 2. The earlier a child is diagnosed, the sooner they can begin treatment. Research consistently demonstrates that children who start services early have better outcomes in communication, socialization, and behavior.

Welcome!

I'm so excited to announce the launch of my private practice in Garden City!

For over 20 years, I have worked almost exclusively with the early childhood population, in preschool, home, and clinic settings through the county Early Intervention and school district Committee on Preschool Special Education programs. I am thrilled to now offer a private assessment option for families as they seek support for their children.

I welcome referrals for initial evaluations, as well as those from parents seeking a second opinion after a previous evaluation, and re-evaluations to assess progress and current functional level.

I look forward to helping you better understand your child’s strengths and needs!
