She left the web, she left the loom,
She made three paces through the room,
She saw the water-lily bloom,
She saw the helmet and the plume,
She look'd down to Camelot.
Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror crack'd from side to side;
"The curse is come upon me," cried
The Lady of Shalott.
- Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892),
The Lady of Shalott (excerpt)

About the Painting:
The painting is based on the legend of the medieval Lady of Shallott of the Arthurian Cycle as recounted in the ballad by the English poet Alfred Lord Tennyson. Henry Meynell Rheam was a successful painter of gender paintings and post-impressionist-style portraits. Later he began to create paintings based on legendary themes and fairy tales close to the work of the Pre-Raphaelites. He worked mainly with watercolors and less frequently with oil paintings.
