In the U.S., a chiropractor typically goes through 8 years of schooling, post-secondary school, in order to become a doctor of chiropractic. Some programs accept 3 years of undergraduate study and 3 years of post-graduate study.
Our spines are made up of over 120 individual muscles, 220 specialized ligaments, and over 100 joints and houses the spinal cord, a long, thin, tubular bundle of nervous tissue and support cells that extends from the brain.
Pregnant with back pain? Sciatica, a common pregnancy problem, can be very painful. Pregnancy-related sciatica occurs when the baby's head presses against the mother's sciatic nerves, causing a sharp pain in the upper leg area.
Did you know that high heels can cause chronic back and knee pain? If you suffer from leg and back pain, try to avoid high heels. And to help prevent back pain, limit how often you wear high heels.
Did you know that smoking can contribute to back pain? Smoking reduces blood flow to the spine, and smoker's cough can aggravate back conditions. If you smoke, talk to your doctor about an effective program that will help you to quit.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes widespread pain in your muscles, ligaments and tendons. Fibromyalgia may also cause fatigue and multiple tender points in your body where slight pressure causes pain.
Your spinal cord is about 17 inches long and is housed inside your spine. The spinal cord, which runs from the brain stem to just below your last rib, functions as an information highway, sending messages to and from your brain.
To help avoid back pain while you are pregnant, keep these tips in mind: pay attention to your posture, sleep on your side instead of your back, wear supportive low-heeled shoes, and use a chair that offers lumbar support.
You can rest easy when you place your care in the hands of a chiropractor because of the rigorous education and testing requirements necessary to obtain the Doctor of Chiropractic degree.
It is common for pregnant women to experience sciatica, a condition characterized by pain in the upper leg area. Sciatica can occur at any point during a normal pregnancy, but is most common during the second and third trimester when the baby is larger and in a lower position in the abdomen.
If you've had some type of injury, visit a chiropractor before assuming you may require some type of surgical procedure. After all, if you're wrong, the chiropractor can relieve the pain and you can avoid surgery.
Spinal stenosis is a medical condition that occurs when the space between the vertebrae narrows, causing nerve pinching and pain. Stenosis can occur in the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar regions, causing pain in the neck, low back, buttocks, legs, thighs, or feet.
To help prevent back pain associated with driving, use these tips: adjust the steering wheel and sit so you can easily reach the pedals and the steering wheel, use a lumbar support pad on the seat and stop to get out and stretch at least every few hours.
Also known as herniated cervical disk, a ruptured disk is a condition that occurs when a spinal disk in your neck has become damaged and ruptured. When this occurs, the ruptured disk bulges and puts pressure on, or pinches, nearby spinal nerve roots, causing pain in your neck, shoulders, and arms.
Gravity makes us shorter. Need proof? Skylab astronauts measured 1.5 to 2.5 inches taller due to spinal lengthening that occurred during zero gravity. Those of us on earth actually shrink - between a quarter of an inch and five inches every decade after 40 - thanks to gravity.
The body's nervous system is the key to keeping you healthy and disease-free. A problem with the spinal column can affect the proper functioning of the nervous system and lead to a variety of difficulties.
Scheduled chiropractic treatments are an easy and pain-free way of avoiding vertebral subluxations and remaining in top physical shape.
Chiropractic care is safe for pregnant women and can help to ensure a healthier pregnancy. Chiropractic care also helps control pain in the joints, back and neck caused by the body's changes during pregnancy.
Adjustments are just one of many ways a chiropractor can adjust displacements in your spine. Exercise, ice treatments and heat therapy can also be offered, depending on your particular condition.
Sometimes, a temporary malady in a child is thought to be growing pains. After a pain-free examination, we can locate problem areas and restore normal function in the spine, helping your child feel much better.
