"If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need"

When I first moved to Arizona the thought of the desert and gardening did not even cross my mind until I visited my first farm out here and saw all the beautiful fruits and vegetables that were growing. I quickly realized desert gardening is actually a thing and a thing that works well.
We are definitely novice gardeners, in the beginning we just randomly planted strawberries (very hard to grow and AZ) and failed miserably. One of the tricks to desert gardening is to know what to plant, when. The next thing we planted were carrots and they came out awesome.
When I first decided to do a post on our gardening adventures I think I had grand ideas. We originally wanted to get pumpkins in the ground around Father's Day in hopes of one by Halloween but summer in AZ brought along an extreme heat wave that curtailed any plans for outdoor time unless we were in the pool.
This week we are on vacation ( stayed tuned for next week) but before we left it cooled down...haha yeah, right but we did manage to get our pumpkin seeds planted along with some peppers and cucumbers. So, we will see what happens.
We like to play around and this year we had some success more carrots, tomatoes, our eggplant and jalapeƱo plants survived the extreme heat wave. Now if I can only figure out garlic, I was really excited for garlic.

My intention for the week was to get the kids out and do some gardening. I really want to plant some pumpkins in hopes of one by Halloween but alas, this extreme heat wave we have been enduring in AZ this past week curtailed any amount of time outside. So, I dug up this fun patriotic activity from last year just in time for the holiday weekend.
We have been making these Fourth of July mason jar lanterns for a couple years now. We usually make three or four of them to give to family and neighbors and maybe keep one for ourselves. They are super easy to make and are really pretty when lit. They make a wonderful addition to decorations. Caution, doing this craft may make you spontaneous belt out rousing renditions of Yankee Doodle Dandy and God Bless AmericašŸ˜‰
For the craft you will need mason jars, streamer paper (red, white and blue) and modge podge. You want to start by spreading a thin layer of modge podge over the mason jar. Then apply your streamer paper by wrapping them around jar followed by another thin layer of modge podge. Allow mason jar to dry and then place a tea light (we like the non flame kind) in the bottom of jar.

"Yoga creates children who are bright lights in this world"- Shaka Khalsa

Here is a little fact about myself, I love yoga. I love the way yoga makes my body feel strong and refreshed after a good vinyasa class. I love how yoga can calm an still my racing mind and brings everything into focus. I love how yoga gives me an inner competition with myself to perfect a pose I have been working on and strive to do others. I also love to do yoga with my kids and am so happy when they ask to do yoga with me. One of my most fun experiences with yoga was getting my kids yoga certification through Rainbow Kids Yoga led by the wonderful Lesley Carney.
The first rule for any kids yoga class is to make it fun, so this week I broke out a few my favorite yoga tools and let my kids make up a class. When I told them they could pick whatever they both happily picked out the Yoga Spinner game. The Yoga Spinner game is a fun interactive game that anyone can play, even adults and some of the poses can become pretty advanced. After the game we played around with a few of their favorite poses, tree and down dog and finished with a fun shavasana. I even broke out are heart rocks from a couple week back and a few giggles were present before a little relaxation.

"Life is just better with a dog" I am quite certain many people have said this

Hello there, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ruby Tuesday and I am the newest member of the Takagi family. I am a 2 year old English Bulldog (with a little mix of something else) and I was rescued from Almost Home Bulldog Rescue. Almost Home Bulldog Rescue is a wonderful organization in Arizona that specializes in the bully breed. They took me in after someone left me chained to a post on the side of the road, I was very skinny and had just recently had puppies. Through Almost Home I got my weight up, was spayed, vaccinated and microchipped and on June 12th I was officially adopted by my new family. I just so happy with my new family.

My likes are:
Following my new mom and dad everywhere.
Playing fetch with my new little humans
Movie nights
Squeaky toys are the best
Walks, although I like to pull
Getting treats
Sleeping on the couch
I like other dogs but sometimes I get a little too excited around them (I am working on it)

My dislikes:
I still can't get them to give me popcorn
Getting into my kennel (I am fine once I am in it but give them absolutely no help getting there)
My arch nemesis.... the vacuum
Now a short word from my mother

We are absolutely in love with our Ruby Tuesday. We have had her for a little over a week and it seems like she has always been a member of our family. We put in an application with Almost Home Bulldog Rescue four months ago for a different bully at the time. When they called a couple weeks ago for Ruby we almost did not respond since we knew we had a family vacation coming up. We are so grateful we did not pass up the opportunity she is delightful, great with the kids and as she said she is working on dogs. If you are wondering why an English Bulldog as some of you know we lost our beloved English Bulldog Clyde last year at the age of 11 and just love the breed. We would have gone with another breeder but we wanted to give adoption a try and we are so happy we did. Life really is better with a dog.
We know that dogs are not for every family but here are a few benefits for having a dog with kids. They teach responsibility, Colten's job is to feed her. They encourage physical activity, we take her for a walk each day. They make them happier, there is actual science to this one but I see the way their faces light up when she is around. Finally they promote good health, again science but it is said exposure to the dander helps improve immune systems especially in young children.

"A loving heart is the beginning of all knowledge" -Thomas Carlyle

I grew up in New England, Maine to exact and if it ever hit 90 for a couple days it was considered a heat wave. I have to admit summer is not my favorite time in Arizona, I want to be outdoors with the kids but during summer outdoor time has to be limited, timed and monitored. Whoever, coined the phrase "but it is a dry heat" I personally want to smack because anything above 100 is just plain hot.
Ok, that is enough complaining about heat. One season I really have come to enjoy here is winter and this past winter my kids were the perfect ages ( 3 and 6 at that time) to start family hikes. We went hiking most weekends and I got to enjoy the state I have been living in for almost the past five years a little more. To make hiking a little more exciting for them we gave them the challenge of finding as many heart shape rocks as they could. Although we did not bring all the rocks home we did manage to come back with quite a few plus some seashells from our hike on a visit to Grammie in Florida.
I will say when we starting collecting the rocks my brain started getting ideas of how to turn it into a project. So, this morning on this day when temperatures are suppose to reach a cool of 108 and an extreme heat warning in effect until later on tonight, we painted at few of our favorite finds...you guessed it outside. Don't worry we were out early under the patio, painting away talking, laughing and just enjoying ourselves. You never know we might just have to hide a few of our masterpieces in the local parks or on our next hike.... now off to jump in the pool because it is going to be a hot one today!!

What to expect from a private in home massage

I often have people ask me, "What do you mean by in home massage?" The answer is, the massage therapist travels to you and the massage is done in the privacy and comfort of your own home. You do not need to provide anything, I travel with my table, sheets, lotion, music, etc.. I have first time clients that sometimes are too nervous to go to a spa, others are too busy to get to a spa, I also have clients with medical conditions that make it impossible to get to a spa and they love the fact that someone is able to travel to them. Massage therapists do not care if you have a large home with tons of space or only a small apartment, all that is needed is a space to set up my table and maybe a little space to move around. If you have a certain spot in your house that you like, I can set up there. If it is beautiful outside and you want a massage in your yard (outdoor massages are great) just let me know. I highly recommend a private in home massage at least once, your body will thank you for it.

"Cookies make the world a better place"

Baking in late spring seems a little odd to me, especially here in Arizona where our temps are already above 100. I tend to think of baking as a winter time activity but my daughter got a princess baking set for her birthday a couple weeks back and has been hounding me everyday since to bake cookies so, today we bake.
I was originally going to be super fancy and was scouring my baking books for a good sugar cookie recipe so we can use her cookie cutters. Then it dawned on me the patience required for making ones own cookie dough with two small children. So for the sake of sanity (mostly my own) I cheated with the pillsbury sugar cookie dough. Hey, we still had to cut, roll and press the dough so don't judge us.
As you will see what went in to the oven did not exactly come out as we had planned. I did however accomplish my goals of having some fun in the kitchen and keeping the kids off electronics for a little while so it was a mom win this morning. Just pretend we are decorating stars and crowns.

School is out for summer here in Arizona and even as I am typing I am trying to wrap my head around how fast the school year flew by. I am now officially a mom to a 1st grader and my youngest will be starting PreK this fall, my mind is blown. I will say that I do enjoy hanging out with my kids ( we might revisit that thought on week 3 of summer break). We have a lot of fun things planned and that includes a trip to Disney. I will admit however that I refuse to be their soul source of entertainment this summer so this week I made Boredom Baskets. Now, I am not going to tell you every step I did to make the baskets, if you can't figure that out then.....well.... I have no words. I will tell you though the cool thing about these baskets, I had to make 2, is that I set a goal that I could not exceed $20.00 per kid. How did you do that?, well I am glad you asked. Back in January I was walking in heaven, I mean Barnes and Noble and stumbled upon their end of year sale. For those of you that don't know about it they mark a whole bunch of stuff down up to 75% and they also have a $2.00 section. With that plus my member discount of 10% I basically walked out the door with some of this stuff. I also took advantage of Michael's with their 20% of entire purchase including sale items coupon. So with those and a few other coupons I got from January until now I can tell you the most expensive item in these baskets was under $5.00. My favorite item was the Peg Your IQ originally $10.00 on sale for $2.00 walked out the door for $1.80. So, now when my kids come to me and say they are bored I can say but, I can say, get out of here, no I wouldn't, but I can say go get something out of your basket, mama wants to read a book.
Oh, I also had the kids make summer bucket lists because Wee Wellness Wednesday is back for the summer. We will be doing something fun and hopefully wellness related each week and I will post about it.
