Getting Curves With Mitsi

by Mitsi S. Hearn

I ate a Nature Valley Oatmeal Raisin Granola Bar manufactured by General Mills a few weeks ago (February 2024), and when I turned the wrapper over to look at the calories, I noticed: Contains Bioengineered Food Ingredients. Then the same day, I ate a package of Planters Tropical Fruit & Nut Trail Mix manufactured by Hormel Foods, LLC, and saw the same notice. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, bioengineered food contains genetic material that has been modified through certain laboratory techniques and for which the modification could not be obtained through conventional breeding or found in nature.
When I did research to see if bioengineered food is good or bad for human consumption, of course, there were arguments on both sides. As comic strip - Arlo and Janis surmised: If you believe half the stuff you read on the internet, you won’t believe the other half.
According to my cousin of Georgia, Chef Lady Kay: the first I knew of [bioengineered food] was corn from working in labs at Purdue in the early 1980’s. They were trying to figure out how to grow massive amounts of corn in a small space. I cannot promise I will never eat another bioengineered food product. I like them because of their convenience, but I am more conscious of their existence. That said, use your own judgment if you want to continue eating these foods or remove them from your diet.
There are 11 workout machines plus the stepper on the Curves circuit. The one featured in this article is the Bicep/Tricep. The machine looks like a backless, long, narrow stool with wrist pads (rollers) perched on the front. A bicep is any of several muscles having two points of attachment at one end. It is the large muscle in the upper arm that turns the hand to face palm uppermost and flexes the arm and forearm.
A tricep is any of several muscles having three points of attachment at one end. It is the large muscle at the back of the upper arm primarily responsible for straightening the arm.
The correct workout posture for the Bicep/Tricep machine is to: 1) Sit in the machine with feet flat on the floor. 2) Place your wrists between the wrist pads. 3) Make a fist with thumbs on top and palms facing each other. 4) Keep your spine aligned. 5) Alternate arms as you pull up with one arm and push down with the other. 6) Move as fast as you can in both directions. (Avoid hitting the stops at the bottom).
