Happy EMS week. Each day of EMS week has a theme. Today’s theme is EMS for children. Goshen EMS would like to take this time to tell you an incredible story about the little girl in this picture. She is only six years old and happens to be the daughter of one of our amazing crew members. On one of the beautiful sunny days last week she and her dad were fishing at a pond in the next town over. While out on this fishing trip, her father suffered a medical emergency, causing him to become unresponsive, striking his head on the rocks below. This quick thinking little girl calmly called her mom from her smart watch and was able to tell her exactly what happened. Her mother being an EMT herself knew just what to do. What happened next could only be described as a simple twist of fate. Our Lieutenant Frankie DeGennaro was at home only a few minutes away and after a quick call was able to be at her side within five minutes. From there, 911 was called and the neighboring agency was unable to crew sending the call to Goshen EMS. Our crew arrived and was able to transport her dad to the hospital. EMT Julianna Durand and EMT Amanda Wells provided amazing care in route to our local hospital. We are happy to say that her Dad was discharged later that day and is expected to make a full recovery. If it were not for the quick thinking and confidence of this little girl, the outcome may have been very different. Goshen EMS found it only fitting to celebrate her. So before our monthly drill, we surprised her with a party complete with a certificate, a life saver pillow, balloons, hugs and of course, cake! It is so important to teach young ones of any age that they can make a difference. Please talk with your children about how to call 911 and what they can do in case of an emergency. Exposure young ones to emergency service workers in your area. If you live in the Goshen EMS district, please reach out to blschief@goshenems.com to schedule a tour and meet and greet with our team. We are always happy to have children in our station and talk to them about ways that they can make a difference. Once again great job Madelyn! Your Goshen EMS family is so incredibly proud of you.
