Study Recruiting Westies with Pulmonary Fibrosis
Medication called “4MU” for suspected pulmonary fibrosis in dogs: Can you help?
Hello! We are looking for dogs with suspected pulmonary fibrosis (Westie Lung disease) for a study on a new medicine that we hope will be helpful!
Check to see if your dog could be included in this study:
Inclusion criteria:
West Highland WhiteTerriers or mixes with suspected pulmonary fibrosis are eligible to enroll. Suspected clinical signs (symptoms) would include exercise intolerance and rapid breathing. Diagnostic testing prior to enrollment would include a physical examination, routine laboratory testing, and chest x-rays or CT scan, that exclude another more likely cause of the disease, such as an infection or heart problems.
Dogs can remain on treatment with any other medications that your primary veterinarian prescribes for your dog, or any supplements/treatments, as long as your dog has been on those medications for at least 30 days.
Interested? Terrific, let’s connect:
We would love to discuss virtually (Zoom) with any interested families; you can live anywhere and participate in this study (you don’t need to be in the local area near Tufts). Just email us and we can set up the zoom: westielung2023@gmail.com
We would mail you the medicine to give at home during the study, making it simpler for your dog to participate.
Things we will ask you for your dog to be included in this study:
1) Let us look through your dog’s medical record and let us know what medicines they are taking
2) Take a video of your dog’s breathing on phone
3) Fill out a survey about your dog’s breathing
4) See how far (if at all) your dog can walk in 6 min time.
5) Give the medicine daily with or without food
6) Recheck at 1, 2 and 3 months by zoom
7) If you have blood samples planned at your vet, have a little extra (1 teaspoon) collected for testing.
