Nikki and the Plant Going from nurse to being the patient! After suffering a life-changing traumatic brain injury

It’s been 104 days since Ozz arrived at the SPCA Serving Erie County.

For a dog, that kind of waiting starts to become a rhythm; morning after morning in the same kennel, watching the world happen just beyond the door. Watching other dogs get chosen. Watching joy build, then disappear down the hallway in a leash and a goodbye.

And Ozz is still here.

Still watching. Still hoping. Still quietly believing that his turn could be next.

What makes Ozz so hard to overlook is how unchanged he remains through all of it. He still lights up when someone stops at his kennel, like he’s been waiting just for that moment. He still leans into affection as if it’s the most important thing in the world. He still plays with toys, enjoys his bones, and looks forward to walks, as if the outside world is something he’s always ready to share with someone. And at just one year old, he still fully believes he might be small enough to curl into your lap and belong there.

There is so much love in him that hasn’t had anywhere to go.

Ozz isn’t asking for anything big.

Just the chance to finally be chosen.

❈ Traumatic brain injury stole my joy, but cannabis returned it. ❈

Nikki, a NY state resident, has always been a proud and diligent worker. She’s served as an HVAC filtration salesperson, later starting her own company, then as a casino dealer, and most recently, as a pediatric nurse. She had suffered two traumatic brain injuries during her younger years, but it was the third TBI that suddenly changed everything. In a heartbeat, her life changed from one of optimism, vibrancy, enthusiasm, confidence, and extroversion, to one of constant pain, withdrawal, depression, and hopelessness.

While trying to help administer a routine vaccine to a young boy, Nikki was thrown against the wall, suffering a significant TBI and cervical instability in the process. Nikki’s TBI has caused cognitive deficiencies, confusion, memory loss, anxiety, and pain. She found herself unable to work, unable to interact with others, and in a very dark place. None of the numerous traditional medications she’s tried helped, and if fact, their ghastly side effects left her even worse off.
