My Past Year as President of the Michigan Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (MiAND)
My past year as president of MiAND, has filled me with a sense of accomplishment and pride and I know our board shares in this. It’s been a rewarding experience outside of my career and personal life. The profession of dietetics, healthcare and the U.S. are experiencing profound changes so it’s an interesting time to lead, advocate and explore new opportunities.
Our clearly defined strategic goals were designed to support our mission, improve community health and promote membership growth and development. The leadership and team members who supported each goal were highly engaged, collaborative and creative. They owned their goal and were committed to their teammates and our organization. Their vast array of backgrounds from healthcare to academia, business and private practice provided the ability to leverage different views, skill sets and resources.
Memberships in all professional organizations have been on the decline over the past several years. When finances dwindle, dues are an easy cost cutting measure for many.
As a result, creating and communicating the value in MiAND membership will continue to be a primary goal. This year’s board did an outstanding job building upon the foundation started by past president, Mark Thiesmeyer-Hook and those before him and that which will continue under Leatta Byrd's presidency.
I am proud of the strides we made in advancing the field of nutrition and dietetics in Michigan. Our efforts in advocacy, education, and professional development have set a strong foundation for future leaders to build upon. I encourage Michigan dietitians to stay connected and renew, rejoin and thrive in our collective endeavors.
My special thanks to our Michigan Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Executive Director, Megan Armstrong and our board Leatta Byrd, Julie Orth, Meghan Wilkinson, Mark Thiesmeyer-Hook, Elena Bogliana, Michelle Gilleran, and Nick Pomante. I value your time, talent and enthusiasm as a volunteer! Thank you.
