“At the time of African-American herbalism’s development, it was crucial that this practice remain clandestine as it was outlawed. Why? Because its use gave the enslaved autonomy, which was the antithesis of what slavery was supposed to be.

Medicinal knowledge of plants was often used to fight back against enslavers or was commodified without credit to those enslaved, so secrecy and code were of the utmost importance.”

To understand African-American herbalism, or other modalities of herbalism that are tied to the identity of its practitioners, is to understand and deeply honor the circumstances that these modalities developed under and why.

Susie’s Ginger Chai (non-caffeinated)

I drink this everyday for the health benefits. I make a big batch for the week, store in the fridge and warm a cup up when I’m ready to enjoy. I also make a dried version of all the ingredients to use when I travel, however, sometimes I’m unable to make it, and I miss it! The main ingredient is ginger, because it’s fantastic for our immune system.

Here are the ingredients for two cups. Feel free to double, triple, or quadruple the recipe. Enjoy!! And let me know what you think or what you put in your chai or favorite tea.

Boil 2 cups water

Then add:
1-2 TBS ginger
5 cardamom pods (crushed)
1/2 tsp fennel seed
1 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp black pepper
3 cloves
1/2 cinnamon stick (or more!)
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Optional Ingredients:
1 Bay leaf
1 Star Anise
1 tsp Roobios (adds nutty flavor and is rich in antioxidants)
1 tsp Black Tea
Milk
Sugar

Let it simmer for 10 minutes, strain and enjoy!

Which uncommonly spoken about scents are obvious to you?

Joy Milne noticed a peculiar musky scent on her husband years before his Parkinson’s diagnosis. Initially dismissed as sweat, she later realized the same odor permeated a support group. This observation led her to challenge scientists to investigate the link between scent and disease.

During a controlled study, Joy correctly identified Parkinson's in six patients via scented T-shirts. Remarkably, she also flagged a healthy control subject who lacked symptoms. Eight months later, that individual received a formal diagnosis, proving Joy’s incredible accuracy was no fluke.

Joy’s rare sensitivity helped researchers identify specific chemical compounds in skin oils. This breakthrough is now fueling the development of non-invasive diagnostic swabs. Although her husband passed away, Joy’s extraordinary gift continues to revolutionize early detection and save future lives.
