Strengthen Your Relationship by Getting Good At Making Up

It’s not about the conflict, but about the repair!

Strengthen Your Relationship by Getting Good At Making Up Conflict looks like it is the biggest problem in relationships, but according to Dr. John Gottman, the amount of conflict in a relationship doesn’t determine the success of a relationship. What is more important is the capacity for couples to repair the goodwill and rapport in their relationship a...

Brain fog: how trauma, uncertainty and isolation have affected our minds and memory

This is a really interesting article explaining how many people's brains have been impacted by this past year!

Because in our evolutionary history we relied on each other for our physical survival, our nervous system is hardwired to respond as if social threat is as dangerous as a physical threat. This is why a social rejection creates such powerful physiological responses. We can cognitively know that we are not in danger but our body still responds as if social rejection could be deadly to us.

This was a really interesting article! There are so many things we’re learning about our nervous system and it’s relationship to our mental health.

Understanding our mental health through a nervous system informed perspective helps us understand our experiences with more self compassion. It also helps us as therapists to address symptoms with a foundation of neurobiological understanding.

This article is worth reading! One interesting thing is it doesn’t suggest banning social media, but limiting the usage and teaching girls how to use it in a healthy way. I think that’s such a great approach to it.

10-year BYU study shows elevated su***de risk from excess social media time for young teen girls In the longest study to date on the effects of social media on teens, BYU research found a correlation between time spent on social media and suicidality risk among teenage girls.

How a conversation starts predicts how it will end.

After studying couples for the last 40 years, Dr. John Gottman found that nearly 1/3 of all conflicts can be resolved with the right approach. By studying what happy couples did during conflict, he was able to develop a new model for solving your solvable problems in an intimate relationship.

Another amazing quote by Bessel Van Der Kolk. Trauma is not just the event(s) that occurred that were considered “traumatic.” Trauma is the effect that a person, event or prolonged circumstances has on us 🍃🧠🧘🏽

Too often we define ourselves by our mental state.

We are so many other amazing things🤍🤍

It can be a difficult and real struggle, but it still doesn’t have to define who you are💕

Another reason I love EMDR therapy! It changes not just our perceptions of ourselves, but all areas of our lives🤍

Failure can feel horrible! I don’t know of anyone who likes that feeling‼️

Our brain is wired for survival so comes up with lots of negative thoughts to “protect” us from feeling that way.

We can challenge and reframe our thoughts!

Instead of thinking: I will never get this right. I don’t know why I thought I could do this 🤦🏽‍♀️

You can choose other thoughts like: Failing this time doesn’t mean I’ll fail again. The only way to figure this out and get the results I want is to keep trying✔️✔️

We can also ask ourselves questions like what did I learn from this? What could I do differently next time?

One last suggestion is to not be afraid of the feelings that come. The more you can acknowledge, accept, and be ok with the feelings you have, the easier it will be to move forward💕

Many times I wait for motivation to strike to get going or get started on something😬

The reality is that motivation generally doesn’t start like that!

We want motivation to start internally and work it’s way externally.

The reality is that if we wait for motivation, it won’t come.

Motivation gets started externally and then moves internally.✔️

The best way to build motivation is to just do something!💯

The rest of the Mark Twain quote is “The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and starting on the first one.”

Great advice for getting started and building motivation💕🤍💕

How many times do you find yourself worrying about things that never actually happen??

Penn State did a study where they tested people’s worries.

In the study they found that 91% of the time the participants worry did not happen!!

Additionally, within the 9% that did happen, a third of the time the outcome was still better than anticipated.

The “what if” strategy can be helpful in challenging our worries.

What if I don’t fail the test? What if I have a great time at the party? What if I don’t get sick?

Remind yourself that there are multiple possibilities on how things might turn out!

I think, especially as women, we’ve been sold this false idea of what a great relationship should look like.

In romantic movies we hear “You complete me.”

So when we’re in a relationship and we’re not either hearing those same lines or realizing that maybe we don’t agree on everything, we’re wondering what’s wrong with our relationship?

This can lead to resentment over unmet expectations and discontentment with the relationship itself.

When I got married, for some reason I really felt like in a good relationship that we would agree on everything!

And if we weren’t agreeing then I needed to keep talking and talking to him until he did agree with me😂

I felt like if he didn’t fully agree with me then he must not truly understand me.

Our relationship improved when I finally became ok with us not needing to agree on everything.

And that we could have different opinions and interests and still respect and love each other.

This helped me to love him for who he was without putting impossible expectations on him❤️

As humans we’re meant to have a full range of emotions.

Our emotions teach us things about what’s going on within us.

Anger stems from a sense of injustice. Would we want to ignore that?

Do we want to be happy when someone we love dies?

I think the fear is if we acknowledge them they’ll always be there and never go away.

Research has shown that when we acknowledge our emotions they actually reduce in intensity.

It’s ok to feel all of these emotions. They don’t make us a negative or a bad person.💕

Do you make decisions based on your fears or your hopes?

When our choices are based on fear, it’s challenging to show up as the person we want to be.

Fear based decisions can affect how we react and respond to others, and lead to resentment.

Making choices based on our hopes doesn’t mean everything works out just like we planned.

But, hopefully it helps us be the person we want to be. ♥️

When we’re feeling depressed it can feel like it will last forever.

It can feel like it is impossible to ever feel happy again.

Depression tells us to do the opposite of what will actually make us feel better.

It is important to remind ourselves that no feeling lasts forever💕

Pretty basic statement, but really true!

We have to move beyond our comfort zone if we really want to see change in our life.

Sometimes only a small change can bring positive results.

Small changes can include expressing gratitude, taking time in nature, reaching out to a friend, serving someone in need, or spending time with family💕
