Too bad America didn’t adopt Boxing Day - it’s the best! No more running around getting everything ready, and no need to cook; fry up the leftovers and tuck into some Bubble & Squeak. I’ve of course taken to giving it an Ayurvedic twist, adding new Turmeric Ghee and some cumin, as well as staying true to my roots with some HP sauce, Branston pickle and Heinz baked beans. And a Christmas cracker of course! Lastly, a big dollop of my homemade cranberry & orange relish for that added fruity zing and vitamin c injection. Just make sure you don’t keep left overs for long than a day, two at a push, as it will begin to loose its prana - life force. Talking of prana - or apana - any ideas as to why it’s called bubble & squeak?!…

I came down with a rotten head cold on Monday evening and Tuesday morning I took this Ayurvedic herb along with a big teaspoon of local honey plus lots of hot water and turmeric & ginger tea, repeated a couple times during the day, and by Tuesday evening I was feeling so much better. I am convinced this remedy shortened the life of the nasty lurgy I had. Stock up on herbs, oils, spices and balms from during their winter sale through Sunday.

My favourite day of the year is nigh!ever since I spent the Winter Solstice at Stonehenge about a decade ago, it’s held a special place in my soul. To me, it feels like having ardously climbed to the top of a precipice then enjoying the long easy slide down the other side. It is the return to the light! And whilst I enjoy a nestling down in the darkness, this juncture in time brings about much promise and joy! Over the next 12 days, I’ll be reading one of the twelve tales of the winter solstice gathered and retold by author in her book The Return of the Light. Then on December 21st, the morning of the solstice, I’ll share my favourite story during my weekly Hatha & Meditation class (Sundays, 9-10:30am at Grass Lake Medical Center). In Ayurveda, consuming warm, cooked, and spiced foods is a key principle for maintaining a strong digestive fire, or agni, which is essential for good digestion, nutrient absorption, and toxin elimination. Warm foods help to balance the cold, dry, and light qualities of the Vata and Kapha doshas, especially during the colder seasons. I’ll be starting a week of soup beginning this coming Saturday, where each soup with be simple to prepare, inexpensive and deeply satisfying. Comment below if you’d like to receive the recipes.
