September’s flower is the pretty Aster, which symbolizes love, wisdom, faith, and innocence. The name “Aster” comes from the Greek word for star, and they are sometimes called Earth’s stars. ⭐️ Greek mythology tells how’s asters represent the tears of the goddess Astraea, who wept tears over the earth at all the corruption in the world, er yeah we get it girl. The flowers are often used in traditional medicine to treat ailments such as cold and digestive issues. Talking of traditional medicine, please join me this coming Friday evening at the wonderful to learn about the traditional health and wellness system called Ayurveda. Simple fare for supper this eve. After some fried food - which I hardly ever eat - and ice cream - ditto - on a day trip to the beach yesterday, my tummy has been pretty unhappy. This simple dish that I call Sweet Carrot Rice is my go to for a quick and simple meal that is both nourishing and easy on the gut. Remember, it’s not necessarily what you eat but what your body can digest that is important, especially at the junctions of the seasons - happening right now folks - when we can be prone to getting a little under the weather - summer cold anyone? 🙋🏻‍♀️And lastly, notice the portion size. Supper is meant to be a supplemental meal, hence the word, and should be eaten a good 3 hours before bed to properly digest. When you place your hands together in Anjali mudra 🙏🏼, open them out to see the appropriate size for your meal. Overeating can be as detrimental as eating the wrong food so watch your portion size! Here’s the recipe if you want to give it a go!
Sweet carrot rice recipe 🥕
1-2 medium carrots, peeled and either grated or diced into small pieces
Half a white/yellow onion, diced
1-2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon ghee
Shake of turmeric
Shake of cumin
Shake of ground ginger
1 cup basmati rice
2 cups water
1 cup golden raisins - or less - to taste
To garnish: fresh cilantro and shredded coconut
Salt n pepper

Heat oils in a medium pan
Chop carrots and onion and add to pan, cook for 5-8 minutes until softened
Add dry rice and cook another 5 minutes or so.
Add the spices - as much as you like - cook for another 5 minutes
Add the water and bring to a boil.
Once it’s boiled turn the heat down to a simmer for 12-15 minutes, cooking until the water has been absorbed and the rice is a golden yellow colour.
Add raisins and fold in.
Serve garnished with fresh cilantro and shredded coconut.
All these ingredients are sweet and cooling so this makes an ideal light lunch or supper even in summer. Enjoy! 😋

As you think, so you become. According to Swami Vishnudevananda, Vedānta & Dhyāna (Positive Thinking and Meditation) is the most important of all the 5 Points of Yoga, for we become what we think. Yoga teaches us that a positive outlook on life can be developed by learning and practicing the teachings of the philosophy of Vedānta; and the mind will be brought under perfect control by regular practice of meditation and living a Yogic lifestyle. Thoughts become words, words become deeds and we are what we repeatedly do. Join me Sundays 9-10:30am in person or online for Sivananda style Hatha & Meditation at Grass Lake Medical Center and transform your thinking for the better.

Sooooooo many benefits to getting your legs up higher than your heart. Our tickers work hard for us every single day so why not give them a little rest and allow gravity to assist with circulation. Elevating the legs also 🪷 alleviates swelling in the legs and ankles 🪷 reduces pain in the legs caused by conditions like lipedema, varicose veins and veinous insufficiency 🪷 lowers the risk of deep vein thrombosis 🪷 eases low back pain 🪷 relieves muscle tension. This restorative pose, called Stonehenge, is a firm favourite in my weekly Rest & Restore class - Thursdays at 10am at Grass Lake Medical Center - and one I regularly ‘prescribe’ for clients who are burned out. Throw a blanket over your tummy and hips, use another to create a supportive cradle for your head, et voila. Set a timer for 30 minutes - or don’t - and melt into stillness. Yum! 🧘🏼‍♀️

Just home and refueling from teaching one of my favourite classes: Sivananda style Hatha Yoga. One of the reasons I hold this practice in such high regard is that it is fully-rounded and includes 5 principles or areas of practice, and today I wanted to focus on the principle of Proper Diet. A yogi’s ’proper diet’ is one which includes foods that we classify in Ayurveda as Sattvic, that is they bring balance and clarity to the body and mind. They neither agitate nor r dull the mind, as is the case with foods that are respectively more rajasic or tamasic in nature. Swami Vishnudevananda says, “Proper diet provides fuel for the body. The yogic diet is a vegetarian one, consisting of pure, simple, natural foods that are easily digested and assimilated and that promote health. One should have a certain knowledge of dietetics in order to balance the diet. The yogic attitude toward diet is to eat to live, not live to eat.

The yogi will consume foods in minimum quantity with the most positive effect on the body and mind and with the least negative impact on the environment and least pain to other beings. One of the first ways to take responsibility for the planet is by eating with consideration.” How do I include this principle in my classes you might ask? I bring an offering each week that we enjoy after class that is either fresh or dried fruits and nuts. This week, I brought an interesting hybrid fruit called an Apriplum, otherwise known as a Plumcot. Very cool! Next week, I’ll discuss the principle of Proper Breathing, or Pranayama.

I’ve not been posting much lately, rather, I have been reading this book and trying to heed its advice. Being of Pitta nature, I am skilled in over scheduling myself - it’s hard to resist saying yes - I LOVE what I do and have always said I get energized by being around people. But, now that I’m a little older - hello 👋🏼’wisdom years’ - I’m finding I need more rest, in fact I CRAVE more rest, and will make a point of scheduling little pockets of rest throughout my week - actually write it in my calendar (see, can’t help myself). Particularly during the hours of 2-6pm during the second Vata segment of the day when our energy stores naturally take a nose dive, I say, go nap!! But, set an alarm for say 40-50 minutes. Don’t go deep into sleep sleep, rather kip on the sofa and recharge yourself. Or, listen to a yoga Nidra recording perhaps. Do a restorative yoga pose like legs up the wall. (Ever noticed the word RESTORE has REST in it??). The point is, STOP PUSHING YOURSELF INTO EXHAUSTION PEEPS! The author of this book says that “far from being indulgent and unproductive, rest is actually the key to human flourishing.” And I really, REALLY fancy a flourish myself. Anyone else?
