Time for our Q&A series—where our board-certified plastic surgeons provide expert, trustworthy answers to the questions patients ask most.
Q: What are my options for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy or lumpectomy?
A: Breast reconstruction can be done using implants, your own tissue, or a combination of both. You can choose to have immediate reconstruction (performed during the same surgery as the mastectomy), or have it at a later time.
Implant-based reconstruction uses saline or silicone implants to restore breast shape, while autologous (flap) reconstruction uses tissue from areas such as the abdomen, back, or thighs to create a breast with a natural look and feel.
Your surgeon will help you decide which approach is suitable for you based on your medical history/overall health, the type of mastectomy or breast cancer treatments you've had, anatomy, desired appearance, among other factors. Ultimately, the goal of the procedure is to help restore your comfort, confidence, and sense of well-being after breast cancer treatment.
