Summer is the perfect time for backyard BBQs, but it's important to keep safety in mind. Here are some essential tips:

-Grill Placement: Place your grill on a flat, stable surface away from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches.
-Supervision: Never leave your grill unattended. Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
-Cleanliness: Regularly clean your grill to prevent grease buildup and flare-ups.
-Proper Tools: Use long-handled tools to avoid burns and splatters.
-Fire Safety: Keep a fire extinguisher, bucket of sand, or garden hose nearby.
-Food Safety: Use a meat thermometer to ensure proper cooking temperatures and avoid cross-contamination by using separate plates and utensils for raw and cooked foods.

Stay safe and happy grilling! 🍔🌭

Yesterday, our Emergency Medicine team had the incredible opportunity to inspire the next generation of lifesavers at TechGYRLS 2025, a hands-on STEAM event in partnership with YWCA Greater Green Bay.

Led by department administrator Shari Jackson and physicians Dr. Katrina Destree and Dr. Cassandra Schandel, young participants stepped into the back of a real ambulance and learned how to perform CPR to the beat of Chappell Roan’s “Hot to Go!” 🎶 (Yes, it’s the perfect tempo at 100–120 BPM!)

A huge thank you to De Pere Fire Rescue for providing the ambulance and helping make this experience unforgettable. 🙌

As we gear up for the holiday weekend, remember: behind every sparkle is a serious risk. In 2024 alone, nearly 15,000 people were treated in ERs for fireworks-related injuries, most involving burns to the hands, face, and eyes.

👨‍⚕️ Dr. Ryan Murphy, emergency medicine physician at Aurora BayCare Medical Center, shared essential firework safety tips in the Shawano Leader, Oconto County Times Herald, and Wittenberg-Birnamwood Enterprise & News:

🔹 Sparklers can burn—don’t let their size fool you.
🔹 Eye injuries often happen when debris falls during shows.
🔹 Supervise children closely and never let them handle large fireworks.
🔹 Use water buckets to safely dispose of used sparklers.
🔹 Leave the big displays to the pros—especially if alcohol is involved.

Thank you, Dr. Murphy, for helping keep our communities safe this summer! ☀️
