Other signs include:
• dry eyes and very dry skin
• night sweats and hot flashes
• constipation
• light-colored bowel movements
• nausea, bloating, belching or indigestion after fried, oily, or creamy foods
• discomfort under right-side ribs
• deep pain between shoulder blades
• in traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Ayurveda, the liver and gallbladder are specifically associated with our inability to internally be present with the experience of the emotion of anger. Nothing any of us know anything about, right? 😉 😜 Very often, by improving circulation through the liver and gallbladder, both emotional and muscular tension around the area also eases. More space, more joy, better sleep. Win-Win-Win 🙌 💕

Along with “Nature First”, one of the principles we rely upon when working with patients is respecting the hard-won wisdom of ages.

Inclusive of, but far beyond all the science, all the courses, the degrees…

About our Bodies. About Nature. About the elegant continuity between both.

Born of observing the patterns of nature, seasonal changes, and needs for different stages of life - these understandings were often passed from mother to daughter…to daughter over time.

Principles of Food as Medicine, Therapeutic Foods and Herbs, and even necessary cycles of growth and rest - demonstrated to us by our forests and fields.

These are principles upon which our bodies, our physiology, are based.

Alignment with them not only strengthens our health, but also our internal authority, and trust in our bodies.

And so, you’ll find that the products we recommend are real foods…sometimes the most lovingly prepared grass-fed ghee or whole eggs to nourish your hormones and brain health.

Sometimes organ meats, based on indigenous knowledge of expedient healing, pressed into tablets, nothing altered, nothing adulterated. (For simplicity, people tend to lump all “tablets” into “supplements”, but don’t be fooled, these are real and powerful foods.)

Sometimes a spagyric herbal preparation, meant for all parts of your being, is what’s called for.

We are honored to partner with nature in these ways, and humbled to have gathered enough to now pass along some of her wisdom ourselves.

Extra Hallowe’en pumpkin seeds?

Use them to nourish your hormones! Pumpkin seeds are one of the simplest ways to support your estrogen levels naturally.

Just clean, dry/dehydrate the seeds, and grind with a coffee or spice grinder (to help with digestion) when ready to eat. (Or…just buy them this way!)

For the first part of your cycle (follicular phase) use a combination of ground pumpkin + flax seeds to support estrogen. Both are rich sources of omega-3’s.

For the second half of your cycle (luteal phase) support estrogen’s partner - progesterone with a combination of ground sesame + sunflower seeds.

These are rich in omega-6’s and zinc, and sunflower seeds are a great source of selenium (bonus thyroid support!)

Use 1 tbsp of each per day during it’s appropriate phase. Simply add to salads or smoothies, or even sprinkle on soup.

Estrogen dominance, or cyclical skin breakouts? Use only the sesame + sunflower combo!

Irregular cycle and don’t know where to begin? Start with the pumpkin + flax combo on the next full moon. Then switch to sesame + sunflower seeds 14 days later.

📚Regional cookbooks are some of my favorites. The most interesting are often found in dusty corners of old bookstores and vintage shops.

I love the margins filled with handwritten substitutions and notes from past cooks (“Good - needs more cinnamon!” ☺️) that are a sweet reminder of generations past nourishing their families and passing on traditions.

Older recipe books (before the 1950’s - when research on dietary fats was sorely misinterpreted!) are full of nourishing recipes for hearty soups, stews and savory sauces made from slow-cooked mineral-rich bone broths. 🥰

I love finding historical recipes made with varietals of plants often only found locally, or instructions on how and when to ferment a vegetable to make sure it lasts the winter. An Acadian cookbook reminds readers to prepare sauerkraut only on the full moon! People of the past knew the 🌝’s impact on water content!

Some older recipe books instruct on how to live off the land - how to prepare local wild game in the most healthful, least wasteful way 💛

Many older recipe books are organized by season to extend the harvest by fermenting, canning and preserving (say for a looooooong New England winter) and some even include helpful herbal tinctures to support our body’s natural seasonal shifts and challenges. (We’ll explore some of these here soon! 😊)

🍳The egg on the left is brighter and has better shape (protein structure). This is because the egg on the left is a farm-fresh egg from a friend, and the other is a typical (not the worst, not the best) grocery store egg.

🍳the farm-fresh egg is darker and has a more intact protein structure because the chickens get to happily roam and eat fresh plants, grass and bugs (as all happy chickens would do, given the chance!). This gives them high quality nutrition which results in more nutrient-rich…eggs!

🍳the average grocery store egg (not free-range or cage-free chickens) has less color and less intact protein because the chicken got “feed”, which typically includes farm byproducts and soy…definitely not what happy chickens would choose given the choice.

Have you ever cracked open an egg and the yolk was a really light color? I think we all have an instinct that this is less nourishing for us, and so companies have caught on, and artificial color is added to lots of foods to make them APPEAR healthier 😕

In nature, wild salmon get their rich color naturally from the nutrient-rich astaxanthin,a natural reddish-orange antioxidant in the shrimp and krill they eat….a natural benefit we get from eating wild fish. In contrast, farm-raised salmon is naturally GRAY 😟 …it is the norm for pink color to be ADDED to make it appear healthier.

Or, have you ever noticed that butter or ghee made in the Spring is much darker? It’s for the same reason! If the cows are happily grazing on super nutrient-rich fresh spring grass, the butter and ghee will be a richer color.

I’ve been wanting to try this lemongrass ginger beef bone broth for awhile, and with the chill in the air…today was the day.
Bone broth (from a clean source) is one of the simplest and most nourishing foods for gut health- which also means it’s great for skin, a strong immune system, and making healthy, happy neurotransmitters 🙌🧠!

I used a basic pho recipe from the website and subbed in what I had on hand. Added thinly sliced beef to the hot broth at the very end, and a squeeze of fresh lime and wow! With a good broth, it was very simple to make an amazing soup!

On these extra hot days, here’s a refreshing alternative to sugary “sports” electrolyte drinks.

I 💗 💗💗 this upgrade! It’s been keeping me cool on the golf course and sharp on the archery field all summer…which says a lot given how much this girl sweats 😬

💧Handful of ice in your water bottle, then fill nearly to the top with cold water

🍋 Add a BIG splash of fresh lemon/lime juice (I sometimes use strawberry 🍓 kombucha for a little zip!)

⚛️ Add 1 dropper of Energetix Homeopathic Rehydrate + 1 dropper of Spectramin liquid mineral electrolytes

Stay hydrated - Stay cool! 😎

One of my favorite summer activities is making rose petal elixir.

🌹Rose calms the mind and soothes the heart.

The first time I had this I felt like my heart was enveloped in a cozy warm embrace. It was so lovely, so now I make a little batch every summer from the roses in the yard.

I give out little bottles during the year as special gifts or when it seems like it could be helpful 💗

It’s really easy to make…

1. Full a quart jar with several big handfuls of unsprayed rose petals (I like to pick them just after the roses have fully opened to enjoy them in the yard as long as possible)

2. Add 1/4 cup raw honey, local if possible

3. Fill the jar with enough brandy (~1.5-2 cups) to cover the petals really well. (This year I used a local raspberry liqueur from instead and it was extra special)

4. Cover and shake well. Now the anticipation…

5. Let the rose become infused over 6 weeks…turn the jar every few days to mix.

6. At 6 weeks, strain out the rose petals and transfer to dark glass dropper bottles.

To use, place a few drops under your tongue, then take a few slow deep inhales and exhales 💗

(You could also add a splash to sparkling or hot tea or enjoy drizzled over berries!)

Real Food in Real Time…Portable Charcuterie!
Heading out for a quick sunset boat ride and this is what we’re bringing…
We don’t always have all of this in the house, but usually some combination of similar finger foods that are easy to have “on the go”

Our Philosophy:
Know Your Body.
Trust Your Body.
Work With Your Body.
🌿
Years ago a patient shared an insight she had with me. She said “my body is like a puppy. I may treat it poorly or neglect it - sometimes feed it not the greatest of foods and even occasionally forget to feed it when we I get distracted, take it for too-long runs and exhaust it when it really needs rest instead, even work extra long hours when it yearns for play”.
“And yet, it will be there, happily waiting for me, tail wagging, eyes smiling, 100% of the time. Until it simply can’t”.
She got it.
Our bodies are doing their best for us, 100% of the time, even when it doesn’t seem so. I would say ESPECIALLY when it doesn’t seem so. Biology simply doesn’t know any different 💗. Biology only knows how to move forward. Your body is only EVER moving forward. That is nature.
When we take the time to pay attention and listen, and learn how to nurture our body’s own nature, we are aligned and more in sync with the greater force that IS nature. I know of nothing more powerful or beautiful, or enriching 💗☀️🐝🌿💧✨
