Dr. Covey discusses the benefits of holiday traditions, and how they don’t have to be complicated, “They can be something simple, like everyone gets holiday pajamas on Christmas Eve; or you all hop in the car, grab a hot chocolate and drive around looking at holiday displays.”

Parenting is hard. Societal and internal pressure to be the best parent to your child can be overwhelming. One TikTok mom recently went viral with a video highlighting the importance of taking a break from the day-to-day responsibilities of parenting and taking time to connect with your children.

Discussing this idea, Jenelle Thompson-Keene, LCPC with Thriveworks told Parents that including kids in everyday tasks like running errands can help strengthen these parent/child relationships. “Let them pick the music, pick up a favorite drink or snack for the road trip, and spend some time with your child. Car conversations can be a wonderful time to catch up and check in with your kids in a more casual but meaningful way,” she said.

A mom took to TikTok to link kids' behavioral concerns to a lack of connection with parents. Experts share their tips for leaning into time with kids.

Feeling valued at work is important but can be more difficult to achieve in remote or hybrid work environments with minimal in-person connection. This sense of feeling “seen” and appreciated by others at work is known as emotional proximity. When we have emotional proximity, we feel like our role and contributions matter.

Traditionally, coworker connections are built by sharing physical space. So how do we foster these connections in the age of remote work? Ryan Culkin, Chief Counseling Officer with Thriveworks spoke with WorkLife and shared that one way to foster emotional proximity is through Employee Resource Groups or ERGs. These groups help coworkers of similar interests meet and get to know each other.

The return to offices is proving that mere physical proximity isn’t enough to make people really feel connected at work.

Being excluded as a child can be a painful experience with impacts that last into adulthood. Dr. Brandy Smith with Thriveworks offered her insights to PARADE Magazine on the traits that kids who were often excluded carry with them as a result.

Dr. Smith shared that these adults have a tendency to isolate. “Sometimes, when a person is often excluded, they will focus on self and create their own world, whether that be an imaginative world they connect with or becoming overly independent and not wanting much, if anything, to do with others.”

Remember when you were a kid performing at a school play, choir concert or another event? Do you recall looking out into the crowd, searching for a familiar face? Spotting your parents or loved ones in the audience brought a spark of happiness and bolstered your confidence in your performance.

Parents do their best to attend the events they can, but sometimes, life gets in the way. Alejandra Galindo, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with Thriveworks, shared her thoughts with Parents on the importance of showing up for our kids and ways to handle the times you can’t.

“It’s important to give ourselves grace as parents for so many reasons,” Galindo says. “Parents often try their best to do what they can and give their kids the things they didn’t have growing up. While this is a noble cause, our kids may not have the same worries we did as children.”

Being there for your child during events like school concerts, games, and recitals matters big time. But what if you can't make everything?

Rejection is something we don’t typically enjoy experiencing. But is there a way to desensitize ourselves to being rejected? A recent TikTok trend known as “rejection therapy” has individuals online putting themselves into situations where they might get rejected in an effort to become more comfortable with it. Thriveworks therapist Marisha Mathis, LCSW, provided her perspective to Well+Good on how to use rejection therapy and when it might do more harm than good.

“You shouldn’t engage in rejection therapy without reflecting on the reasons for rejection and your feelings around it,” Mathis says. “Rejection therapy can become mechanical and unproductive. It could neutralize the original intent for emotional growth or self-awareness.”

Is there any merit to this TikTok trend? (Spoiler alert: not always!)
