North Carolina became “First in Co-Response” with the establishment of Chapel Hill’s Crisis Unit in 1973. Across the state, dozens of other counties and municipalities have followed suit, with the largest growth occurring in the last 5-7 years. In keeping with NC’s tradition of being at the forefront of crisis response, the City of Greensboro’s Community Safety Department, which houses the Behavioral Health Response Team, is excited to announce the 1st Annual NC Coalition on Crisis and Alternative Response Summit in September 2025!

This event is intended to be a place for co/alternative response programs in and around the state to meet, share knowledge, and promote the growth and practice of crisis response. Additionally, this is an opportunity for municipalities and departments who are interested in forming co/alternative response programs to learn more about how to implement teams in their own communities.

On August 19th, the Greensboro CVI Ecosystem Convening took place! From powerful conversations to real solutions, the room was filled with energy, ideas, and people who care deeply about making a difference. Leaders, youth advocates, and community organizers--ALL united with one goal: ending violence and planting peace!

Let’s keep the momentum going! This was more than just a convening—it was a call to action.

What a day! On August 16th, we hit the road with purpose, passion, and a whole lot of power at the Ride for Recovery!

From the early morning kick-off to the last roar of an engine, the energy was electric and the community spirit--Absolutely unbeatable! Whether you rode the route, cheered from the sidelines, or just showed up for the cute dogs at the park (no judgment), YOU were part of something special.

Huge shoutout to our LEAD Coordinator, Mary Houser and the staff at Fellowship Hall for a great event. Thank you to every rider, volunteer, and supporter who helped turn the wheels of hope and healing. This wasn’t just a ride—it was a reminder that recovery is possible, and we’re stronger when we ride together.

* They came. They smiled. They handed out so many brochures! *

This past Saturday our Peer Support Specialist, Jessica, and BHRT Crisis Counselor, Kristina, were on-site at The Center for Health Equity at Cone Health’s “Building a Better You” event. They provided helpful resources and answered questions about our department. It was a great opportunity to connect with the community and share what we’re all about!!!

Last week our LEAD Coordinator met with Myrtle Beach SC, Chief of Police Amy Prock and James Bucko, Health Care Coordinator. The visit helped strengthen relationships and expand understanding of how law enforcement and community programs can work together to create change.

While others were swinging bats, some of our staff were swinging... pamphlets!

BHRT Crisis Counselors, David and Imari, and our STAR Paramedic, Billie, held it down at our table for First Responder Night at the Greensboro Grasshoppers game — keeping the vibes high and the resources stocked.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by! You ask the questions, we bring the answers. And maybe some candy.

NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES…Some wear Community Safety Department shirts and carry clipboards and radios!

Our Community Safety Department Peer Support, Jessica, with the assistance of BHRT Assistant Team Lead, Dewey, fearlessly responded to the scene and encountered a very fluffy emergency:

A client's outdoor cats had kittens and unfortunately, they were not able to care for them. One of the kittens our staff assisted had an injured paw.

After some tactical coaxing (and light bribery), the kittens were safely transported to Guilford County Animal Shelter for check-ups and adoption.

Saving lives, one paw at a time!
