The SHOULDs
Should thoughts are actually shame language I should ________ I have to ______. These type of self talk phrases deplete our motivation and decrease our self esteem.
A quick 3 step process helps us transition from I Should to I Choose which is a transition to choice and empowerment instead of the weight of expectations and shame. When you say to yourself I Should:
1. Pause and ask yourself who made up the rule? Who taught or said you “should”
2. Ask yourself do I want to keep following that rule?
3. If no, then change the expectation. If yes, then it’s now I choose to______, not I should.
Below is an example:
My house should always be clean.
1. Who made up this rule? My mom said this, and society expects this from me due to
gender norming since I identify as female.
2. Do I want to keep following this rule? No. I want to create attainable chore goals and not put pressure on myself that my house has to be pristine all the time.
3. I now say to myself—I choose to create a realistic chore list. I choose to know I am
accepted even if my house isn’t perfect by other people’s standards.

While journaling has been proven to have so many benefits for mental health, it can be a challenge to just sit and write! If wanting to get into the habit, bullet journaling is a great way to start. Bullet journaling before bed (at least an hour before to prevent increased tension in the body) can help the mind let go of things, decrease ruminating, and calling back information we are afraid of forgetting. This is one format to help with this.
Stressors:
List of any challenges, worries, or stressful occurrences, thoughts, or feelings during the day.
Positive Evidence:
This list can include gratitude, noticing something that makes us smile, an
accomplishment for ourselves such as brushing our teeth or arriving on time, a kind memory, a surprise compliment, and more.
To Do:
Anything that is a task to be remembered whether short term or long term.
Affirmations:
Any soothing phrases to recite while managing thoughts and feelings while trying to rest. These phrases can be created by summarizing stressors with positive evidence.

The 3 R’s of Self-Care help bring balance to not only having a moment to pause and reset but also a moment to restore ourselves. With self-care. it’s that fine line of balance between rest and avoidance, a pause and denial. The 3 R’s of Self-Care provide an outline for balance. (1) Relax (2) Replenish (3) Remove Procrastination

Relaxation is a moment to rest and unwind.
The goal of Replenish is to bring energy to our body and celebration of ourselves.
The goal of Remove Procrastination is to help Relax and Replenish reach their fullness by taking steps to complete necessary tasks.
