September is PCOS Awareness month. If you have ever received a PCOS diagnosis, you know it can be overwhelming and there are a lot of sources of "information." The right dietitian can be so helpful for managing PCOS symptoms, Laura wrote the following blog post to help you know what to look for.

You have questions. You were just diagnosed with PCOS and you have no clue what to do next! Or you have been diagnosed for awhile, but still feel like you’re not exactly sure how to manage your PCOS symptoms. You have questions and are looking for professional nutrition support, but where to go? H...

Repost from

I am really looking forward to this conversation that will take place live on Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube with . If you can’t join us live, I hope you’ll check out the podcast. We have lots to unpack about how fat phobia and diet/wellness culture are showing up in the pro-aging movement. Hope to see you there!

Debra L. Benfield, MEd, RDN/LDN, CEDRD-S, RYT Benfield, founder and owner of Body in Mind Nutrition, told me that there is an ageist diet/wellness culture that leads to a lack of body respect in the Pro-Aging movement. Deb wants to blaze a path into elderhood without the scales!

Deb has worked with people with eating disorders and disordered eating. She encourages clients to make choices toward vitality and feeling well; to partner with our bodies. Deb talks about Intuitive Eating.

Lots to learn in this show, and maybe some things to unlearn.

When you give yourself permission to eat any type of food, you no longer have to eat fun foods as if it is the last time you are going to have it.

If you have this freedom (and privilege of access to the food) then you create space to eat that food in an amount that is enjoyable to you instead of in response to scarcity- which causes us to want to eat a lot of something we won’t get again later.

But you can’t just tell yourself you can have some now AND some later and not really mean it- aka- hope this thinking keeps you from wanting it later.

This thinking keeps you trapped in all or nothing eating.

Dieting is one of the biggest risk factors for eating disorder development.

That doesn’t mean that everyone who diets will develop an eating disorder, but it does mean that dieting and especially extreme dieting (also a form of disordered eating) is something that needs to be taken incredibly seriously.

Our society certainly has some stereotypes about what eating disorders "look like" and, as a result, often things get missed.

What I see a lot is disordered eating that might not *quite* meet the diagnostic criteria (which is an issue with the diagnostic criteria in the first place) . This includes skipping meals, fasting, etc. These behaviors are a Big Deal!

Dieting is the #1 risk factor for developing an eating disorder. Dieting is any behavior with the intention of weight loss.

Reducing the risk of teens developing an eating disorder in the first place IS POSSIBLE! Empower them not to diet in the first place! Support a positive body image and foster self-compassion.

Dieting is the #1 risk factor for disordered eating and eating disorders. Learn how to support your teen through intuitive eating and positive body image

Leave feeling empowered and equipped to differentiate between healthy teen eating and exercise behaviors and what's a Big Deal?

Teens get so many confusing messages about weight and health from the media, teachers and coaches, and sometimes even healthcare providers. What's appropriate and what's not?

Join me 6/29 at 7 pm EST. Recording will be provided for all in case you can't join live.

I hear this from my teen clients quite often. "Laura, EVERBODY skips meals, everybody diets, it's normal! It's not a big deal! "

First off, not everybody. Second of all, just because something is common doesn't mean it's a good idea. Skipping meals is not a good idea. Skipping meals is a Big Deal. Dieting is a Big Deal. Exercising long hours without being adequately fueled is a Big Deal.

Poor body image and disordered eating are sadly quite common in teens. So common that it might not seem like that big of a deal for families, but what if it is? Dieting is the #1 risk factor for developing an eating disorder. That's a Big Deal! Eating disorders have the 2nd highest mortality rate of any mental illness. That's a Big freaking Deal!

Parents, if you're not sure what's normal teen nutrition and what's potentially harmful, I want to help! Register for my webinar 'Everbody Skips Breakfast, What's the Big Deal? "
