Happy Black History Month!
During the month of February, we celebrate all the wonderful accomplishments of Black Americans! Today, we will be highlighting Charlotte E. Ray, the first Black American female lawyer in the United States.
Charlotte E. Ray was born on January 13, 1850, in New York City. Her father was an important figure in the abolitionist movement and edited a newspaper called “The Colored American.” Education was important to Charlotte’s father, so he made sure each of his daughters attended college. Charlotte attended the University of the District of Columbia (then known as the Institution for the Education of Colored Youth) and graduated in 1869.
Charlotte E. Ray then became a teacher at Howard University and simultaneously registered in the Law Department. Charlotte graduated with a law degree on February 27, 1872, and was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar on March 2 that same year! Charlotte went on to practice commercial law and was active in court.
At the Little Red Jumpsuit Foundation, it’s our mission to celebrate, encourage, and uplift women every day while providing information that promotes an overall healthy lifestyle. We believe it’s important to celebrate women and the men who love them by spreading the message of – a life filled with passion, purpose, and joy! 🎈
