Learning how to stay safe and healthy! St. Helena Extension Agents Isabel Zebrick and Nicholas Muse delivered an engaging lesson on food safety, hand washing, and bacteria spreading at Washington Parish Farm Safety Day. Great job educating our future leaders!

Good Morning! We have received several calls this week regarding unusual damage on vegetable gardens, including okra, squash, and tomatoes.

Symptoms being reported include interveinal browning or necrotic areas on leaves. Based on guidance from LSU AgCenter plant pathology, this damage is most likely the result of heavy rainfall followed by cooler temperatures.

While the symptoms may look concerning, this type of injury is weather-related and plants are expected to recover on their own as conditions improve.

At this time, no treatment is recommended. Continue normal care and monitor plants for new, healthy growth.

This week is the ideal time to plant lemon balm, oregano and basil in Louisiana gardens. These warm‑season herbs do especially well when planted after the risk of cool weather has passed and can thrive in garden beds or containers.
