Independence Health System announced today that its multidisciplinary structural heart teams in Butler and Westmorland have both achieved significant milestones. Butler Memorial Hospital, which began offering minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures to treat aortic stenosis nearly ten years ago, completed its 1,000th case this month. Westmoreland Hospital, which began performing TAVR procedures five years ago, has completed its 600th case.

“This remarkable achievement underscores the incredible skill, collaboration and dedication of our physicians, providers and staff to ensure patients receive high-quality, expert heart care close to home, “said Dr. Michael Fiorina, DO, chief medical officer of Independence Health System.

George Davliakos, MD, director of cardiothoracic surgery at Butler Memorial and Clarion Hospital, added, “Reaching our 1,000th and 600th cases is a testament not only to our teams but also to the trust that our patients place in us.”

Yesterday at Westmoreland Hospital, Dr. David Ream celebrated his birthday in the most extraordinary way. Not only did he get to celebrate by helping welcome two sets of twins into the world — he also got to share the moment with the physician who welcomed him into the world 34 years to the day, Dr. Beth Maxwell!

🎉 Congratulations to the heart team at Butler Memorial Hospital for completing more than 1,000 TAVR procedures!

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat aortic valve stenosis. This minimally invasive procedure allows the specialist to replace damaged aortic valves without the need for open-heart surgery.

Independence Health System today announced the addition of Paul E. Lewis, MD, MPH, to its primary care office located at 300 Northpointe Circle, Suite 104, in Seven Fields. He will begin seeing patients in May 2026.

Dr. Lewis is board-certified in both family and occupational medicine and brings more than 20 years of experience as a primary care physician. His clinical focus includes preventive care, the diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses, chronic disease management, preventive screenings and vaccinations, coordination of specialty care, and providing patients with education and support to promote lifelong wellness.
