Disclosing trauma for the first time can be one of the most terrifying, vulnerable, and courageous things a survivor ever does—possibly only second to surviving it the first time. When that heroic feat is met with judgment, shock, or, worse, silence, survivors may walk away feeling more shattered and shamed than before.
But survivors are NOT the crimes that have been done to them. They are not too much, too damaged, or too dirty. Their stories are not too heavy to hold.
As professionals, but also loved ones and even strangers, our presence matters. Listening with compassion, belief, and attuned emotion—not blank detachment or abject horror—can help survivors write new endings to the stories they've been telling themselves for so long.
Therapy services haven't, historically, always been safe rooms for complex trauma survivors to simply exist exactly as they are. We can reduce those compound injuries and provide the kind of support they've always deserved. One that proves they were right to speak...and even helps them increase the volume..
